Love Me Back (Amelia and Daniel) novel Chapter 125

Daniel’s days were a blur of early mornings and late nights. Life was mostly uneventful, except for his futile nightly attempts to sneak into Amelia’s room under flimsy pretenses.

On New Year’s Eve, the Campbell house began to fill with relatives by mid-morning.

The Campbell family had plenty of branches, and most of them owed their comfortable lives to the Campbell Group. Naturally, everyone was on their best behavior, and it was tradition for them to gather at the main house for the holidays.

Officially, Amelia and Daniel were heading for divorce, but with the paperwork still pending, she was technically still the Campbell family’s granddaughter-in-law. So, just like every year, she helped the elderly Mr. and Mrs. Campbell play host, greeting relatives and making sure everyone was comfortable.

Daniel came down the stairs and immediately spotted Amelia weaving in and out of the crowd, as busy as a bee.

“Alright, give it a rest,” he called out. “They’re not strangers—they come every year. You don’t have to be so formal.”

He strode over, grabbed the bag of takeout from her hands, and tossed it to a kid clamoring for chicken nuggets. “All you think about is eating, huh? Keep it up and you’ll start clucking.”

The kid instantly reached back to feel his own rear, half-convinced he might sprout feathers.

Amelia shot Daniel a look. “That’s no way to talk to a child. Aren’t you going to the office today?”

Daniel was lounging in a charcoal sweater, looking completely at ease. Clearly, he had no intention of leaving the house.

“You might as well change your last name to Campbell,” he teased. “Even Slave Driver Daniel wouldn’t force anyone to work on New Year’s Eve, but here you are, bossing everyone around.”

She rolled her eyes and was about to walk away when Daniel said, “How about going to Blue Haven Island on the second?”

Amelia froze mid-step.

Anywhere else, she might not have cared. But Blue Haven Island had always been on her bucket list—a place said to have water clear as crystal, the crown jewel of island getaways. The island kept strict controls on visitors, and getting there meant jumping through endless hoops. If Daniel said he could take her, he must’ve already pulled all the strings.

Her heart leapt at the thought, though she kept her expression neutral. “Who’s going? And for how long?”

Daniel stuck one hand in his pocket and lifted his chin with that trademark smugness. “Who do you think?”

“Watching from up here is just as good,” she replied. “Free fireworks and I don’t even have to get my hands dirty.”

The truth was, she was nervous about the kids bumping into her. In past years it hadn’t mattered, but now that she was pregnant, she couldn’t take any chances.

“Free things really are the best,” Daniel drawled. “I’m free too, you know. Funny you never take advantage of that.”

She rolled her eyes just as he stepped up behind her, his warmth pressing against her back. Daniel wrapped his arms around her waist, resting his chin on her shoulder, his voice low and edged with playful complaint.

“Amelia, it’s been a while since you’ve wanted me.”

She tried to wriggle free, but his arms held her fast. Down below, fireworks crackled and popped. Surrounded by the warmth of the holiday, she couldn’t muster the energy to argue. “We’re getting divorced, Daniel.”

He chuckled, resigned. “Everyone else is offering good wishes for the new year, and you’re out here breaking my heart. That’s so you.”

The house was still full of laughter and noise, but a hush settled between them. They didn’t say another word, yet it felt like they’d had an entire conversation in silence, and for a moment, time itself seemed to slow, as if the world outside had faded away.
