Love Me Back (Amelia and Daniel) novel Chapter 143

No matter how angry she got, there was nowhere Amelia could run. Silkwood, Windtopia—no matter which corner of the globe she escaped to, there would always be a record the moment she left the country. Wherever she went, he’d follow. There wasn’t a place in this world he couldn’t find her.

……

Amelia was hunched over the sink in the restroom, retching until her head spun. She heaved until all that came up was bitter bile; only when there was nothing left did she feel the slightest relief.

“Amelia?”

Sophia had noticed Amelia hadn’t returned to the private dining room and came looking. The moment she saw Amelia’s face—pale as a sheet—her voice shot up in alarm. “What happened to you?”

“...It’s nothing.” Amelia splashed her face with cold water, the sensation jolting her back to herself. “Just heard something disgusting. Made me nauseous.”

Sophia, ever the seasoned friend, understood instantly and rolled her eyes. “If they’re so desperate, why not just get a room? Hooking up in public—how classy is that?”

Amelia managed a faint smile. “Classy is the last word I’d use. Come on, dinner’s probably here by now.”

They stepped out into the hallway just as two servers came around the corner, pushing a trolley. One of them, donning oven mitts, carried a steaming pot of soup. As she passed, her foot suddenly slipped.

“Watch out!” Sophia reacted instantly, yanking Amelia aside.

Amelia tried to dodge too, but after having been sick for so long, her legs were weak. The sudden pull from Sophia threw her off balance, and she stumbled to the side, slamming her lower back against the sharp edge of a metal floor ashtray. A bolt of pain shot through her.

The server managed to steady herself, though some of the hot soup sloshed over the rim. She blurted out a quick, “Sorry!” and hurried away, clearly anxious not to get in trouble.

Frustrated, he lit a cigarette, the tip glowing as he took a drag. Just then, he caught a glimpse of a familiar silhouette slipping into a cab. The sight was a jolt to his heart. He couldn’t be sure, but his instincts had already made up his mind; he started the car.

His phone rang. It was Finley.

Daniel steered with one hand and answered the call.

“You haven’t left yet, right?” Finley’s voice was low, furtive, like he was hiding in a closet. “Violet’s been bawling her eyes out. She called Mogan, and he said he’s coming. You better get back here, or Mogan’s gonna…”

Finley wanted to say “Mogan’s going to steal your girl,” but thought better of it, fumbling for the right words.

Daniel glanced at the cab now passing through the traffic light, then turned his gaze back to the road. “Yeah, I got it. I’m coming.”
