Love Me Back (Amelia and Daniel) novel Chapter 172

Blowing up balloons did little to ease Amelia’s frustration.

All that pent-up resentment kept piling up inside her, bit by bit, until it felt like a mountain lodged in her chest—a mountain she couldn’t topple or move.

With nowhere else to go, Amelia wandered over to the water ride. The attendant, spotting her alone, asked, “Where’s your husband?”

“Dead,” Amelia replied, flat as ever.

The attendant choked on his words. Without missing a beat, Amelia added, “Just died, actually. They’ve already taken him to be cremated.”

The attendant fell silent.

She rode the water ride twice, but even the splashing water couldn’t wash away her sour mood. So she headed for the carousel, riding it over and over until the afternoon sun slipped behind the clouds, the light fading as a chill early-spring wind swept in. The whole amusement park seemed to dim all at once.

When Amelia finally climbed down from the carousel, her phone buzzed in her pocket—a text from an unknown number, with a photo attached.

She wasn’t surprised at all. The photo showed a man sitting in a hospital room, sunlight streaming through the window and pooling on his shoulder as he quietly peeled an apple, looking every bit the picture of serenity.

Too tired to care anymore, Amelia flopped down on a bench and typed:

*Is this really all you’ve got? Running through the same tired old tricks?*

Then she sent another:

*Honestly, if this were a palace intrigue drama, you’d have been killed off in the first episode with these petty stunts.*

She didn’t wait for a reply. Standing, she tucked her phone away and left the park.

The driver opened the car door for her and asked, “Back to Emerald Meadows, ma’am?”

Amelia leaned back and closed her eyes. “No. Take me to the hospital.”

She dozed off in the car, and the driver gently woke her when they arrived.

Violet couldn’t hear what they were whispering about, but just seeing them standing so close made jealousy burn in her chest.

“These are for you,” Amelia said, holding out the fruit basket. “All imported. I thought you’d like them.”

Violet quickly hid her jealousy and managed a polite, “Thank you.”

After a beat, she added, “I don’t eat much imported produce, actually. Our country grows plenty of wonderful fruit—I’m happy with that.”

Amelia nearly laughed out loud at her attempt to sound virtuous over fruit. She feigned surprise. “Oh, you don’t like imported fruit? I just figured, since you seem to like everything from someone else’s house, you’d enjoy fruit from other countries too.”

Violet’s polite smile cracked, her face darkening.

Daniel clucked his tongue and tugged on Amelia’s sleeve. “That’s enough.”

What, he couldn’t handle a few barbs? No wonder she was his precious little darling.
