“How would I know? If I knew, I wouldn’t be asking you!” Sophia couldn’t handle it either. She yelled into her phone, “She left me an envelope, Daniel. There’s a bank card and a note inside. She said she’s gone!”
“Don’t touch anything. I’ll be right there!”
Daniel pushed himself off the couch, swaying a bit. Finley hurried to steady him, but he brushed Finley’s hand away and stumbled out the door, his steps frantic and uneven.
Barely ten minutes later, Daniel arrived at Sophia’s apartment.
“Let me see the note she left.” His hair was a mess, and his shirt was wrinkled—he looked nothing like the heir of the Campbell family.
Sophia hesitated, not wanting to hand it over, but her desire to know about Amelia outweighed her reluctance. After all, Daniel always had his ways.
The handwriting on the note was delicate and neat:
Sophia,
Think of the money on this card as my investment in your law firm. I hope my dearest friend thrives. I’m leaving—don’t worry about me.
Daniel turned the slip of paper over and over, dissecting every word, searching for any mention of himself. There was nothing. Not a single word.
She was gone.
Gone without the slightest hesitation.
If she felt anything at all, it was for Sophia. He didn’t even get a comma.
Why? Did she truly feel nothing for him? Did years of marriage mean so little to her?
Pain twisted through Daniel. He squeezed his eyes shut and balled the note up in his fist.
“What are you doing? That’s from Amelia!” Sophia lunged, snatching the crumpled note from his hand.
“You knew Amelia loved you. That’s why you took her for granted, using up her feelings like they’d never run out. But love doesn’t work like that. When she was crying herself to sleep at night, where were you? With Violet, playing the perfect couple!”
“You think she’s the heartless one? No, Daniel—you were the cruel one. You were selfish and arrogant, always assuming she’d stay no matter what. It never crossed your mind that she might actually leave.”
“All of this—every bit of it—is because of you!” Sophia’s voice broke as the memories of Amelia’s tearful nights came rushing back. “You pushed her until leaving was the only way out! She hates you—she hates all of this. Leaving was the only way she could finally breathe.”
Every word stabbed deeper than the last, sharp and merciless, pain shooting straight through Daniel’s nerves until he couldn’t move, couldn’t even breathe.
He stood there, hollow, like the life had been sucked out of him.
His phone vibrated. It buzzed for a long time before he snapped out of his daze. If he hadn’t been hoping for news about Amelia, he would have ignored the unknown number.
With numb fingers, he pressed the phone to his ear.
“Mr. Campbell? There’s a courier here in town that needs your signature.”
