This kind of thing wasn’t worth overthinking—just hearing it come out of Amelia’s mouth was infuriating. Daniel’s face darkened, his gaze sharp and menacing as he stared her down. “If you ever dare have a child with another man behind my back, I’ll—”
“You’ll what?” Amelia met his eyes unflinchingly. “Kill me?”
He hated this about her—the way she acted like nothing and no one could scare her. Grinding his teeth, he spat, “I’ll kill your lover. Then I’ll tie you up and make you give me ten—no, a hundred—kids if I have to!”
Lunatic.
Amelia cursed him in her head, refusing to let him drag her into his madness. Instead, she kept her tone calm as she brought up Ruby. “Ruby’s still so little. I don’t want any of this to affect her. I’m telling you—she isn’t your child. There’s no point in dragging this out.”
Just hearing those words made Daniel’s blood run cold. He grabbed her by the back of the neck and yanked her close, his grip firm.
Suddenly, the space between them vanished. Amelia’s eyes went wide, her breath caught in her throat, but his presence closed in on her, his breath warm and inescapable.
His lips hovered just inches from hers, his gaze icy and unblinking. “You can be soft-spoken when you want, but stubborn as hell the next second. I wonder—just how much would I have to kiss you to finally break down those defenses?”
In the backseat, little Ruby peeked up from her phone, eyes gleaming with curiosity. Wow—was Mommy about to kiss that man? This was way better than watching her nature videos!
Amelia pushed Daniel away, forcing distance between them. “Believe what you want—I can’t change your mind. You can check Ruby’s records yourself; her birth date doesn’t lie. I’m not some mythical mother who can stay pregnant for three years.”
With that, she slid into the back to sit with Ruby.
Ruby looked up, shut off her animal documentary, and handed her phone to Amelia, who absently ran her fingers over the screen.
Daniel leaned back in his seat, a storm brewing inside him. He didn’t even bother glancing at them in the back.
Amelia could argue with him about anything and he wouldn’t care—but not about a child. The kid had to be his. She could deny it all she wanted, he wasn’t buying it.
“‘That man’? Amelia, keep filling her head with nonsense and I’ll take her myself.”
The door swung open and Daniel strode in, a bag of snacks in hand.
He twisted open a yogurt drink, stuck a straw in, and crouched down in front of Ruby, coaxing, “Come on—say ‘Daddy.’”
Ruby shot a look at Amelia. Amelia faced Daniel, who was just as stubborn about titles as ever. “How many times do I have to tell you? She’s not your daughter.”
Irritated, Daniel pulled the yogurt back and sat down, drinking it himself. He snorted, “You’d better hope she is.”
Three agonizing hours finally ticked by. Two paternity test reports landed in Daniel’s hands.
