Love Me Back (Amelia and Daniel) novel Chapter 248

Daniel’s eyelid twitched violently as he pressed her phone down, his voice sharp. “Who are you calling? What does this even have to do with her?”

Amelia met his gaze, and the only word that came to mind was “phony.” “Now you’re scared, huh?”

“It’s not that,” Daniel snapped, a crease forming between his brows. He clapped James on the shoulder. “How on earth could his mom be Violet?”

What, there’s someone besides Violet? So, besides the mistress, there’s a second and a third?

A wave of nausea rose in Amelia’s stomach, but before she could say a word, Daniel had finished patting James and rapped Amelia lightly on the head. “What is going on in that brain of yours? He’s Finley’s idiot son.”

Silence.

Awkwardness.

A deathly quiet settled in, broken only by the soft gurgle of the garden fountain in the night.

Daniel studied Amelia’s frozen expression and finally lost his temper. “How could you possibly think James is my son? Look at him, does he look anything like me? And how on earth did you get the idea that Violet and I had a child together? I swear—”

He was genuinely furious, jabbing a finger at Amelia’s forehead until her head tipped back. “Is this your new plan? Drive me mad so you can skip the divorce and move on straight to your rebound marriage?”

Amelia’s guilt was written all over her face; she couldn’t even look him in the eye.

Softly, Ruby piped up, “But I heard James call you ‘Dad’…”

Daniel groaned. “You’re just as confused as your mom.” He tapped Ruby’s head. “Does James look anything like me? My son wouldn’t be such a doofus.”

James, thoroughly ignored, crouched down and picked up a stone in silence.

Ruby wore the same guilty look as Amelia.

Great—one big guilty conscience plus one small one. Daniel couldn’t remember the last time he’d been this mad, not even when he was accused of stealing a rival’s files.

He set Ruby down and turned his glare on James. “What’s your dad’s name?”

The driver, confused but obliging, replied, “Finley Walker!”

With that, the driver led James away. Daniel’s face was darker than the night sky as he turned to Amelia. “Hear that? Clear enough for you now? Do I need to take a DNA test to convince you?”

Amelia simply took Ruby’s hand. “Then why did you bring him to the father–child sports day if you’re not his dad?”

Daniel shot back, “Who says a father–child event requires the biological dad? Wasn’t Robert at Ruby’s last year? Is he her real father?”

Amelia faltered, her argument crumbling. When you’re in the wrong, you just lose your footing—Amelia knew it, and she quietly led Ruby toward the car.

Daniel didn’t want to deal with her anymore. What did she take him for? How could she believe he had a child with Violet? It was more than ridiculous—it was an insult to his very character. The more he thought about it, the angrier he got. Before he knew it, he caught up, his hand stopping her from shutting the car door, his temper simmering just beneath the surface.

“Don’t you think you owe me an apology?”

Ruby, buckled in her car seat in the back, blinked her big eyes back and forth between them.
