Love Me Back (Amelia and Daniel) novel Chapter 254

Grandma Edith was in the bathroom brushing her teeth with Ruby. The two of them—one old, one young—bared their teeth at the mirror, mouths full of frothy toothpaste, the scene simple and heartwarming.

Daniel didn’t interrupt their peaceful moment. When Grandma Edith noticed him, she swished water around her mouth and spit into the sink. “Here to mooch breakfast off us again?”

Amelia was probably standing not far behind, within earshot. Daniel’s expression was cool. “What, do you serve ambrosia and the food of the gods here? Why would I need to come here for breakfast? It’s not like I’m starving.”

Grandma Edith wasn’t one to indulge anyone’s stubborn pride. She took the medicine from his hand. “If you’re not eating breakfast, you can see yourself out.”

Ruby chimed in, “Uncle, you should hurry and eat something, or the others will finish it all.”

Amelia stayed silent, but the way she stood, arms crossed and distant, made her meaning clear enough: Sorry, no magical fruit or divine delicacies here—help yourself to the door.

Daniel: “……”

From the moment he walked in to the moment he was sent packing, it hadn’t even been five minutes.

Nora, worried about the old woman, came over from the family’s old house.

With Ruby at preschool during the day and Amelia at work, Nora stayed home to look after Grandma Edith, helping Ashley with some small chores around the house.

After dinner, Nora was about to head back to the old place. Before leaving, she supervised Grandma Edith as she took her medication. But when she rummaged through the bag, something was off—where were the evening pills?

Amelia told Nora to look again, but just then, the doorbell rang. Amelia walked to the entryway, checked the security monitor before touching the doorknob, but didn’t open it right away.

“What do you want?” she asked through the door.

Even with the distortion from the camera, the man’s features were sharp, undeniably handsome. He spoke in his usual businesslike tone: “Dropping off the meds.”

His window rolled down slowly. Amelia kept her face stiff. “Don’t tell me you actually bought a place here.”

Daniel tapped the steering wheel. “Why not? Do you own the whole neighborhood?”

For Daniel, buying a condo in Elm Estates was nothing—it hardly dented his bank account. But for Amelia, it would have taken years of saving. He could move on a whim; she couldn’t.

“Is this some kind of joke?” Amelia stared straight ahead, refusing to look at him. “We’re getting divorced. Doesn’t it bother you, living in the same complex?”

Divorce, divorce, divorce—the word seemed etched into Amelia’s DNA, always on the tip of her tongue. Daniel gave a cold laugh. “Don’t flatter yourself. I’m here on Dad’s orders to keep an eye on Grandma. She’s getting on in years. If something were to happen, do you think you could handle it alone? Neither of us could live with that kind of responsibility.”

Amelia was left speechless, once again feeling the sting of his words.

Daniel studied her delicate, resolute profile. After all this time talking, she still wouldn’t so much as glance his way. Was he really so unbearable to look at?
