Daniel smirked. Oh, sure—she spoke so gently with Robert, but when it came to him, her tone turned sharp enough to cut. Anyone who didn’t know better might think Robert was her husband, not him.
“I just saw you two having such a good time chatting,” Daniel drawled, feigning innocence. “I wanted to join in, but couldn’t find the right moment. Got a bit flustered and dropped it.”
Like hell she believed him. Amelia shot back, “If you can’t join the conversation, maybe don’t force your way in. Ever think of that?”
Daniel, shameless as ever, lifted a brow. “Who says I can’t get in? I’m the best at it, you know that.”
Amelia froze, instantly glancing at the play mat. Thankfully, Ruby and Ashley had gone off to their room. Still fuming, she kicked Daniel hard in the shin.
He hissed, “Hey, we have company, maybe save the flirting for later?”
Robert, caught in the crossfire, gave an awkward but timely cough.
Amelia’s patience snapped. Her eyes went cold. “Are you leaving or not? If not, I’ll get the broom and sweep you out myself.”
Daniel lounged back on the sofa, looking completely at ease, that signature lazy smirk on his face. He nodded toward Robert. “I’m not leaving if he’s not leaving.”
With Robert still there, Amelia couldn’t very well start swinging a broom around. She opted for subtlety. “Robert, Ruby’s got preschool in the morning. I need to get her cleaned up and into bed soon.”
Robert, ever the gentleman, rose to his feet. “Of course. I’ll head out. You all get some rest.”
Amelia walked him to the door. When she turned back, Daniel was still sprawled on the couch, making no move to leave. She yanked the door open wide—polite, but only just.
“Mr. Campbell, did your legs suddenly stop working, or are you just glued to my sofa?”
Daniel stretched out his long legs, looking every bit the incorrigible rogue. “Call me ‘darling’ and I’ll get up.”
The implication was clear: Robert was an outsider.
Robert merely smiled. “It’s early days yet. I’m not in any rush.”
Daniel narrowed his eyes. “Looking to play the homewrecker, are you?”
“I’d never cross the line while you two are still married,” Robert replied, unruffled. “But I’m willing to wait.”
Daniel let out a short laugh. “First time I’ve seen a homewrecker talk so dignified.”
He strode into the elevator, not waiting for Robert, and jabbed the close button. Just as the doors slid shut, Daniel’s voice floated out, icy and resolute. “Amelia and I will never get divorced—not in this lifetime. Even in death, we’ll end up buried side by side. You take all the time you want.”
