Love Me Back (Amelia and Daniel) novel Chapter 262

“You’re the real pig!”

Amelia shot back at him, only to realize he’d already dragged her out of the café.

“Where are we going?” she demanded.

“I’m taking you somewhere nice.”

Amelia yanked her arm free. “Then go. I never said I wanted to come along.”

He opened the car door with a smirk and knocked her lightly on the head. “If I don’t bring you with me, who knows what you’ll accuse me of next? With that overactive imagination of yours, I’d rather not be blamed for something I didn’t do.”

She turned on her heel to leave. “Cheat all you want—it’s none of my business.”

Daniel called after her, “Get in the car. I’ll give you a definite time.”

She hesitated, then doubled back.

The drive was short—just a few minutes. When they pulled up in front of a hospital, Amelia frowned. “Why are we at a hospital?”

Daniel replied, “I’m not feeling well. You can keep me company while I get a shot.”

For someone with Daniel’s imposing build and aloof, dignified air, he harbored a surprisingly incongruous weakness: a severe phobia of needles.

The kind that made him go pale just thinking about them.

When Amelia first found out, she’d laughed herself silly, only to feel a pang of sympathy when she saw him sitting stiff as a board, eyes squeezed shut, every muscle tensed like a drawn bowstring.

However long he sat there, she sat with him, covering the spot on his arm with her gentle hand, shielding his eyes with the other—her own way of protecting him from the world.

Which was exactly why you should never waste sympathy on men. That’s how you end up regretting everything.

Amelia was determined not to be his gentle protector now. She’d have preferred to knock some sense into him.

He knew her too well. Sensing she’d refuse, Daniel blocked her retreat. “Still want to know the exact date of the divorce? Be a good sport and stick around until I’m done.”

Divorce was like a carrot dangling in front of a stubborn mule, and Amelia dutifully followed it up the steps.

The private clinic prided itself on discretion—no signs anywhere. Daniel led her through a maze of corridors until they stopped at an unmarked office. He opened the door, and they stepped inside.

She froze, glancing down at him.

He still had one arm around her, his posture lazy, eyebrow quirked. “Well, we’ve certainly discovered a new way to interact.”

No sooner were the words out of his mouth than Amelia kicked at him. Daniel dodged with an inhuman quickness, steadying her with his other hand to keep her from falling.

“Wow, straight for the knees? That’s vicious.”

She climbed off the chair, torn between handing the envelope back and wanting to look inside. “Is it really company secrets?”

Daniel reached out as if to pinch her cheek. “You’re not a kid anymore. Don’t be so gullible.”

Fuming, Amelia smacked him with the envelope, then yanked out the stack of papers.

Daniel said calmly, “It’s a paternity test.”

She shoved the papers back inside, her entire body freezing as the words sank in.
