Love Me Back (Amelia and Daniel) novel Chapter 268

After a brief pause, he asked, "You still don’t remember anything from before?"

Violet shook her head.

Her memory was a complete blank before she met Daniel. Everything about her so-called “childhood,” as Mogan called it, was gone. All she knew about herself was what Daniel had told her.

Her name was Violet Scott, from Elm City. Her family was all gone.

But she wasn’t obsessed with her past. What mattered to her was the present. She had a sharp instinct for the way each person treated her—Daniel was hot and cold, distant when they were alone, warm and attentive only when Mogan was around.

Then there was Mogan. He seemed fixated on the “childhood” version of her. He’d told her that if it weren’t for the girl she used to be, he would’ve died in the gutter years ago. His feelings were rooted in the past; so even if she couldn’t remember a thing, she did her best to play that part for him. After all, Mogan’s kindness was unwavering, without any conditions.

She’d misread him, once. Thought he might be in love with her. She’d tested the waters, gently, but Mogan had been clear—he only wanted to repay her for saving his life. Nothing more.

It was a debt of gratitude, so no matter how outrageous her request, he’d go to any lengths to fulfill it.

There was also Mr. Brown. She’d only met him a few times, but his gaze was complicated—resentment, resignation, and something else she couldn’t quite decipher, all tangled together in a way that was impossible to read.

Violet was skilled at wearing masks, and even better at using whatever she had at hand.

She didn’t care about Daniel’s mixed signals. She cared about getting him—about keeping him.

Daniel was the first glimmer of light she’d seen after her memory began. She was determined to hold on to that light, no matter what.

Mogan saw her nibble at the apple tart and leave the rest untouched. He knew she was upset and had lost her appetite. He slid a napkin across the table.

"I’m talking to you, did you hear me?" Grace snapped, giving him a sharp nudge. "Do you remember how miserable you were when you couldn’t find her? Don’t forget the pain just because the wound’s faded. Miss your chance once and you might not get another. And if you do, don’t be surprised if your wife leaves you for good."

Daniel’s lips parted, his voice rough. "Has she really been that unhappy with me?"

Grace suddenly wondered how her once-bright son could be so dense. "If she wasn’t, would she have walked out without looking back? Would she be so set on a divorce? Amelia’s only this determined now because she’s been hurt too many times."

"…"

"Just look at Violet—she comes in here like she owns the place, not caring one bit about Mrs. Campbell. Think about it. If she’s this bold now, who knows what tricks she’s played on Amelia in the past."

Daniel’s stomach began to twist with a dull ache.
