Sophia shot to her feet, ready to storm out, but Amelia grabbed her arm. “Sophia, let me finish before you go.”

“We’ll talk later.” Sophia rolled up her sleeves, her temper flaring. “If Zachary wants to dig his own grave by hanging around Daniel, then I’d rather starve than take that bastard’s case.”

Amelia couldn’t hold her back, so she hurried after her. “Calm down, please. Let’s talk this through.”

“I am perfectly calm.”

If anyone looked rattled, it was Amelia. Sophia glanced at her, genuinely puzzled. “Why do you look so constipated?”

Amelia could only sigh.

Sophia’s stride was so brisk that they reached the private dining room in seconds. As Sophia reached for the door, Amelia seized her hand, took a deep breath, and blurted, “I never actually divorced Daniel.”

Before she could process that, Sophia kicked the door open.

Amelia rubbed her forehead, thinking that maybe she should have waited until Sophia had opened the door herself.

Inside, a startled waiter froze mid-order. Sophia, radiating fury, snapped, “Out.”

The waiter didn’t even hesitate—he fled and politely shut the door behind him.

Daniel’s gaze flicked between the two women, finally settling on Amelia’s pale face. “Well, what a coincidence. Why don’t you join us for dinner?”

“Eat with you? Over my dead body!” Sophia snatched the nearest water glass and hurled its contents at Zachary’s face. “I can’t believe I ever trusted you!”

Daniel dodged quickly, but drops still splattered his shoulder. He stood, brushed off the water, and slid in next to Amelia. “Sophia, you’re just as fierce as your friend here.”

“Shut up,” Amelia snapped. “This is all your fault.”

Water dripped down Zachary’s face. He closed his eyes, trying to compose himself, and said hoarsely, “Sophia, I know you blame me, but I didn’t have a choice.”

“Amelia is my best friend.” Sophia’s fists clenched so hard her knuckles blanched, her eyes rimmed with red. “If you weren’t connected to me, she never would’ve let her guard down. But you played her!”
