Robert was a gentleman through and through. He nodded politely to Daniel and Zachary before making his way over to help Sophia.

Heavy lifting was best left to the men, after all. Robert helped Sophia into the car with effortless strength, and the vehicle sped off into the night.

The two men stood side by side in the cool evening breeze, watching as another man drove away with their wife and fiancée. Neither of them said a word.

After a long silence, Zachary cleared his throat and asked sincerely, “Professor, what do you do in a situation like this?”

Daniel narrowed his eyes against the wind. “Mr. Harper, you’re the expert—so tell me, how does one kill a man and get away with it?”

Zachary was speechless.

Sophia was completely wasted, so Amelia didn’t go home that night; she stayed over to look after her.

Even though Sophia and Zachary weren’t married yet, there were signs of him everywhere in the apartment.

A pair of men’s slippers by the door, a toothbrush and razor on the bathroom counter, two pillows on the bed, a few shirts hanging in the closet.

Amelia knew Sophia was hurting. She kept cursing out Daniel, but in truth, she blamed herself—and Zachary.

Later, Sophia rambled on, crying and throwing up, while Amelia was busy all through the night. It was nearly noon before she finally got some sleep.

Thankfully, it was the weekend. There was no rush. When she woke up, Amelia made a pot of hangover soup for Sophia. As she came out of the kitchen, she saw Sophia standing in the doorway, staring at her blankly.

Before Amelia could say anything, Sophia rushed over and hugged her, nearly making her drop the bowl.

“Amelia… this is all my fault.” Sophia sounded like a wounded animal, her face pressed into Amelia’s neck. “I dragged you into this mess.”

Amelia set the bowl down and patted her back. “Switching lawyers wouldn’t have changed anything. Don’t beat yourself up.”

“But if you’d picked someone else, you wouldn’t have been so trusting. You would’ve had a backup plan.”
