The staff finally managed to pull Violet out. She wasn’t hurt, at least not physically, but the fright had left her shaken. Her hair was a mess, her lips quivering, and her face was smeared with dirt—she looked more like a street urchin than the well-groomed girl she’d been that morning.
Panting, Violet jabbed a trembling finger at Ruby. “You… It’s all your fault! You pushed me—”
…
Amelia never expected a simple spring field trip to the zoo would turn into such a mess. When she arrived, she ran right into Daniel stepping out of his car.
She frowned. “What are you doing here?”
Daniel replied curtly, “Don’t worry about me. Let’s go check on Ruby first.”
When they reached the zoo’s infirmary, Amelia saw Violet inside, being examined by the nurse, and realized instantly why Daniel was here.
Of course. His first love was involved too.
Ruby spotted Amelia and ran straight into her arms. “Mom!”
The teacher quickly summarized what had happened. But when she mentioned, “Ruby accidentally grabbed another child’s pants,” Violet leapt up, her voice shrill. “It was no accident! She did it on purpose!”
The teacher stood protectively by Ruby. “Ms. Scott, when someone’s about to fall, it’s natural to reach out and grab whatever’s nearby. You can’t assume a child would do something like that deliberately.”
“If it weren’t for her, I wouldn’t have ended up over the railing!” Violet snapped, glaring at Ruby. “She did it on purpose!”
Amelia ignored her. Kneeling down, she hugged Ruby tightly. “Ruby, tell me what happened. I believe you.”
Ruby tried to be brave, but she was only a little girl. She’d been holding it together, but in her mother’s arms, her composure crumbled and tears welled up.
“I really didn’t mean to…I promise. I tripped and, by accident, grabbed her hand.”
