To be on the safe side, she took Ruby to the hospital. Only after the doctors confirmed there was nothing wrong did she finally breathe easy.

Amelia brought up the donor match. “Dr. Martinez, is there still no news about a match?”

Dr. Martinez replied gently, “Finding a donor just takes time. As soon as we hear anything, you’ll be the first to know. But Ruby’s recent tests all look good, so try not to worry. We’ll keep managing her treatment, and a match will come.”

Because Amelia had acted early, Ruby’s condition was well under control. But no matter how well things were managed, the underlying problem still needed to be solved. Ruby was so young—her whole life was ahead of her. She couldn’t spend it trapped by illness, always fearing things might get worse.

As they left the hospital, Ruby tilted her small face up to Amelia. “Mommy, if—well, if I never get a new liver, will I die?”

The word sent a chill through Amelia. She knelt and ran her hand through Ruby’s soft hair. “Of course not, honey. And remember, we’re just waiting our turn. It won’t be long now.”

“But what if our turn never comes?”

“Oh, sweetheart, how could that happen? You’re so precious—God must have big plans for you.”

Ruby pressed her cheek against Amelia’s, her little face pale and gentle. “Mommy, I’m not really afraid of dying. I just worry that if I’m gone, you’ll be all alone.”

Amelia tried to hold it together, but after a few deep breaths, the tears came anyway—overwhelming, unstoppable. She hugged Ruby tight, sobbing into her hair.

On Monday, Daniel finished the weekly meeting, only to get a call from an unfamiliar number. The person on the line introduced herself as Amelia’s divorce attorney.

So much for starting the week on a good note; one phone call was all it took to ruin his mood.

Daniel sat at his desk, frowning for a long moment before calling Amelia’s number. Unsurprisingly, he was still blocked.

His mood soured even more.
