Daniel Campbell was on a roll today, knocking out task after task with impressive efficiency. Once the rush died down, though, he found himself with nothing to do—and for Daniel, idleness was dangerous. The moment he stopped, his mind started to wander.
He leaned back in his leather executive chair, spun around, and let his gaze drift out the floor-to-ceiling windows into the city’s nightscape. On a night this beautiful, he thought, it would be perfect to spend it with Amelia.
Acting on impulse, he texted her.
*The moon’s so full tonight. Ms. Turner, care to go out and enjoy it with me?*
He didn’t really expect the message to go through. After all, he was a permanent resident of her blocked list. But to his astonishment, a tiny checkmark appeared beside his message—it had actually been delivered.
It felt surreal, like winning the lottery without buying a ticket.
Instead of bombarding her with more texts, Daniel opened WhatsApp and tapped on the pinned chat at the top—Amelia’s. Every now and then, he’d send her a message, but they never made it through. His chat history was littered with “Message not delivered. Recipient has blocked you.”
Still, he gave it another shot—a hopeful emoji, sent with a mix of optimism and resignation.
This time? Success. The message went through.
He was off the blacklist.
Daniel glanced up at the window, catching his own reflection in the glass. Just to be sure he wasn’t dreaming, he pinched his thigh—hard.
Ow. It was real.
A grin spread across his face. He tapped Amelia’s profile picture, still smiling, but his good mood froze midsmile as something else hit him.
A knock at the door. His assistant poked her head in and asked if he had any plans for the evening.
Daniel kicked back from his chair, face suddenly stone-cold, and strode past her. The assistant felt a chill in the air as he brushed by, as if he’d brought a winter storm with him.
