Daniel’s tall frame blocked the doorway as he let go of Amelia’s hand. “I’m not trying to drag you back, but please—don’t go. Just give me a minute. Hear me out.”
If you listened closely, you could hear the pleading in his voice, but Amelia had no patience for it. She glared at the firmly shut door, jaw clenched. “I knew it. An enemy spy, exposed at the critical moment.”
Daniel tried again. “Don’t blame Ashley. She’s a great cook, and I’m sure she’d be good with kids too.”
A single sentence, and he’d found her soft spot. Even if Ashley was a “double agent,” she was still annoyingly sweet, competent, and could whip up a meal better than anyone.
Amelia suddenly thought Daniel was cunning—sly, even.
“Why don’t we talk at my place?” Daniel offered.
After what happened at Diamond Isle last time, Amelia’s guard was all the way up. Her suspicion was written plain across her face. “Either we talk here, or you can leave.”
Daniel’s gaze softened, almost melting. “Okay. Whatever you want.”
He was so unpredictable, almost unhinged, Amelia thought—right as he placed a thick stack of papers into her hands, so heavy it made her arms drop.
“These are all of Violet’s medical records. She’s never been pregnant. Not three years ago, not now—never.”
Amelia stared at him, bewildered.
So he’d come all this way just to show her the other woman’s medical history?
She would need to be sick herself to care.
She tossed the papers back at him. “Keep them. I’m not interested.”
“Violet never carried my child. I never slept with her.”
Amelia’s voice was flat, cold. “Oh. So?”
Daniel’s heart clenched.
She could yell at him, kick him, curse him out—he could take it. But this indifferent “so?” cut deeper than anything else.
“Three years ago, her pregnancy was a lie. Amelia, if you don’t believe me, I can put you in touch with Violet’s doctor. You can ask yourself.”
Amelia’s expression didn’t change. “Sure. I believe you.”
Daniel felt a hollow ache he couldn’t describe. “It was all a misunderstanding. Can’t we talk this through—really talk? Please, stop shutting me out.”
Amelia glanced at the documents in his hands, then looked up, a bitter smile curling on her lips. “What exactly am I supposed to be upset about? You think you’re that important?”
“…”
She raised her brows with a nonchalant air. “You didn’t need to parade a stack of useless paper in front of me or ask me to call some doctor. Daniel, what have I ever said or done that made you think I’d waste my time digging into this for you?”
She lifted a finger and tapped his shoulder. “Mr. Campbell, you never meant that much to me.”
