Daniel couldn’t help but tease her when he saw the look of earnest concentration on her face. “What did you wish for? Don’t tell me it’s about me.”
Her spirits lifted after the jump, and Amelia shot back, “With a face as big as yours, you must go through a ton of moisturizer.”
Catching her off guard, Daniel reached over and pinched her cheek. “If my face weren’t this big, I’d never have been able to win you over. If I’d ever let go, we’d have missed our chance entirely.”
His reasoning was so bizarre, Amelia didn’t even bother trying to make sense of it.
Twenty minutes later, the plane finally touched down and they set foot on solid ground again.
Amelia wasted no time unclipping her harness and shrugging off the skydiving gear.
“Why is there not a single staff member at the landing site?” She looked around at the wide expanse of grass, realizing they were the only ones there.
“Yeah, no one at all. I’m so scared,” Daniel’s deliberately whiny voice rang out beside her. “Will you protect me?”
Amelia glared at him. “This is your doing, isn’t it?”
Daniel put on an innocent face. “Do I really look like I’m capable of pulling something like this off? Why do I always get blamed for everything?”
She didn’t have her phone, so other than guessing directions from the setting sun, Amelia was completely in the dark.
Daniel, on the other hand, looked right at home on the base. He pointed confidently off toward a distant spot.
“Just over that hill and we’ll be back.”
Amelia stared in disbelief. “You mean cross that mountain? The one that looks like a death trap?”
“It just looks that way. We don’t have to climb to the top, there’s a path at the base.”
Amelia felt like she was being set up, hesitating to move. Daniel took her hand and started leading her forward. “You really need more exercise. If you leave me behind, you’ll even miss out on your evening workout. Look at you, already slacking off.”
She swatted at him irritably, but he just pressed a bottle of water into her hand. “How’d you know I was about to give you some water? So clever, I’m impressed.”
She was too flustered to argue and let him pull her along.
Daniel hadn’t been lying—the mountain looked steep, but there was indeed a path winding along the base, probably meant for mountain bikes.
It wasn’t exactly smooth, but it was walkable.
Amelia’s stamina was definitely lacking. After a short distance, she was already sweating and breathless.
Daniel shot her a glance. “Want me to carry you?”
She picked up the pace, hurrying ahead. “Can’t you move any faster? You’re the one slowing us down.”
He laughed, easily keeping pace with his long strides, while she scurried ahead as fast as she could.
Suddenly, thunder rumbled overhead.
Amelia stopped and looked up. Somewhere above the thick canopy, dark clouds had gathered, and the air had turned heavy and damp.
Daniel frowned. “Weren’t we supposed to get a meteor shower tonight?”
Amelia didn’t bother with his comment. “Since when has the weather forecast ever been accurate? We’d better hurry, or we’ll be in trouble when it starts pouring.”
A fat raindrop landed right on her cheek before she could finish. Daniel’s frown deepened. He grabbed her hand and broke into a run. “Not far now—just up ahead!”
She didn’t really know what “not far” meant, but she had no choice but to run with him.
