Love Me Back (Amelia and Daniel) novel Chapter 39

The agreement was drafted in no time.

“Ms. Turner, take a look at the document. If it looks good, have Mr. Campbell sign it. I’ll handle the rest,” the attorney said.

Amelia read through the divorce papers carefully. Thanking the lawyer, she tucked the agreement into her bag and stepped outside the office.

After days of gloomy rain, the sun had finally made a rare appearance. The air was still cold, but that first breath outside felt crisp and invigorating.

Sophia had tried to talk her out of it, but she knew Amelia’s pain wasn’t something that could be reasoned away. The worst part wasn’t falling out of love and leaving—it was still loving someone, yet having to walk away.

“Amelia, want me to take the afternoon off and keep you company? We could finish that bottle of wine from last time,” Sophia offered gently.

Amelia managed a smile. “Let’s save the champagne for when the divorce is official. Then we’ll celebrate.”

Sophia grinned, visibly relieved. “Good point. Popping the cork halfway through is asking for trouble.”

With that, Sophia headed back into the firm, and Amelia made her way to her car.

It didn’t hurt as much as she’d imagined. Disappointment, when it piles up over time, eventually turns into a kind of routine—a habit of solitude, of accepting things you once thought you never could.

She decided that was just fine.

Catching her own reflection in the rearview mirror, Amelia smiled faintly and dialed Daniel’s number.

No answer.

She wasn’t even disappointed anymore. She just wondered—if one day she were in real danger, would she even be able to reach Daniel? The thought crossed her mind: by the time he showed up, the grass on her grave would probably be waist-high.

Not that it mattered. After all, once you’re divorced, you’re as good as dead to each other. Tall grass on the grave is no longer the other person’s concern.

Four hours later, the call was finally returned.

“Do you have to ask me about everything? Maybe you should handle my paycheck, too,” he grumbled.

The assistant exchanged glances with the driver, who gave him a look that said, “Man, this job is more trouble than it’s worth.”

Resigned, the assistant signaled to the driver to head for the branch office.

A heavy silence settled in the car.

Staring out the window, Daniel seemed lost in thought. At a red light, he suddenly spoke. “Tell me—if a woman calls her husband overseas and says she needs to talk, what do you think it means?”

The assistant, finally realizing who’d been on the other end of that call, replied quickly, “Usually it means she misses you, but she’s too shy to say it directly.”

Like magic, Daniel’s mood did a one-eighty.

“Yeah,” he said, brushing imaginary lint from his pants and letting a lazy smile curl on his lips. “That’s what I thought, too.”
