Violet found the whole thing absurd; her tears hadn’t even dried before her cheeks flushed green with irritation.
A male model, caked in foundation, speared a chunk of fruit and held it to her lips. She brushed his hand away with a scowl, then turned to Daniel. “Daniel… can you say something?”
It was obvious Amelia had ordered the models just to annoy her. Yet Daniel let the guy sit right beside her, not so much as batting an eye. In fact, he’d popped in his earbuds, listening to music and looking thoroughly entertained.
Daniel lounged back, one leg crossed over the other, half-listening. When Violet called his name a second time, he finally snapped out of it. With a cigarette hanging from his lips, he offered an insolent, lazy grin.
“We’ve already paid, so don’t let it go to waste.”
He nodded toward the two male models crooning some love song on the other side of the room. “They’re not bad. Let them sing a while longer.”
Violet was speechless.
…
Truth be told, it did sting Amelia a little to spend money on the models.
She’d stopped using Daniel’s credit card since their split, but as she thought it over, she realized that if it weren’t for Daniel and his idiocy, she wouldn’t have had to waste her own money just to vent.
So, she simply forwarded him the bill.
Daniel replied instantly: [Feeling better now?]
Amelia’s standard response: [Did you sign off on it?]
No further reply.
She knew him too well; if it involved the divorce, her messages always got ignored. But when it came to money, he was quick to respond. Just in case he tried to worm his way out, she followed up: [Transfer the money.]
Sure enough, Daniel wired over ten grand.
“What brings you to Dawn Hill Medical?” he asked.
Amelia’s heart skipped. She scrambled for an excuse. “A friend’s admitted here—I just came to check in on her. What about you? Why are you here?”
“I’m at a conference,” Charles replied, his gaze flickering briefly to her bag. “You came alone? Drive yourself?”
“Yeah. I need to get back to campus, so I’ll head out—”
Charles stepped aside to let her pass. “Drive safe. I’ve got to get back, too.”
“See you.”
Charles watched until Amelia’s figure disappeared down the hallway. Then, moving to a quiet corner, he pulled out his phone and made a call.
“Uncle, I have a friend who had some tests done this morning at your hospital. Could you take a look at her results for me?”
