Love Me Back (Amelia and Daniel) novel Chapter 74

Amelia left Ethan’s office with a tangled mix of emotions.

The old man’s message, veiled though it was, was clear enough: “I know you’re in a hurry, but you need to hold your horses.”

Amelia still harbored some doubts, suspecting the old woman might be running a scam of sorts—but coming from the old man, the story suddenly seemed a lot more credible.

Ethan had always been rigid and serious, the last person she’d expect to get involved in anything underhanded.

Time slipped by as Amelia mulled things over. More than half a month passed before she realized it, leaving just over two months left. Fine, she told herself—she could wait another two weeks. But that was her limit.

She decided not to mail the divorce papers to the company after all, and as a result, the gloomy cloud that had been hovering over Daniel finally started to lift.

No one was more invested in Daniel’s efforts to win his wife back than Grandma Edith. Every day, without fail, she’d ask, “Made up with her yet?”

Daniel stared at his screen, filled with unsent calls, and frowned. “Grandma, if I blew up the research facility at Silkwood Institute of Technology, what do you think the chances are the Campbell family could keep me out of jail?”

“Sacrifice the pawn to save the family,” Grandma Edith replied without missing a beat.

Daniel let out a short laugh, half-amused, half-exasperated. “So I’m just a pawn to you, huh?”

“You could be the King of England and I still couldn’t save you,” Grandma Edith said tartly. “That’s the Silkwood Institute’s main research lab. Even a fly passing by has to check its wings at the door. Trying to blow the place up? You’d be better off throwing yourself at the entrance and hoping for reincarnation.”

Daniel scoffed. “What’s gotten into you lately, Grandma? You’re on fire.”

She popped a handful of seedless grapes into her mouth. “Never you mind about me. Your priority is to win your wife back. Can’t get into the facility? Find a way to lure her out. If you can’t even figure that out, no wonder she doesn’t want you!”

That afternoon, Amelia got a call from Baron, inviting everyone out for dinner.

Amelia replied calmly, “We’re getting divorced. I don’t need to discuss it with him.”

That caught Baron off guard. “You or him? Is it because he can’t handle you being gone for so long?”

“No. There are a lot of reasons. I just don’t want to keep going.”

Baron, ever loyal to his students, didn’t hesitate to take her side. “If even a good-natured girl like you can’t stand him, he must be a real piece of work.”

Amelia hesitated, searching his face before deciding to come clean. “There’s something else, Professor… I’m pregnant. I’m not sure if that’ll be a problem for the project.”

Baron was genuinely startled. “You’re getting divorced while you’re pregnant?”

Then, unrestrained, he launched into a five-minute tirade against Daniel, thoroughly venting his feelings. After he calmed down, he added, “Pregnancy won’t be an issue. The project’s just isolated from the outside world. The medical care is the best in the country—you'll be well looked after. Don’t worry.”
