Love Me Back (Amelia and Daniel) novel Chapter 81

Amelia let out a dry little snort through her nose, a self-mocking smile tugging at her lips.

Sophia immediately dismissed her own wild guess—honestly, it had been ridiculous to begin with. “Ignore my nonsense. I deserve a slap for that.” She gave herself a playful smack on the cheek, the sound barely louder than the rustle of a napkin. With her mock punishment complete, she brightened. “I’m suddenly craving Thai food. I already made a reservation—don’t forget to show up.”

Sophia had chosen a place that was bursting with all the flavors and color of Bangkok.

Inside, the restaurant was warm and cozy. Amelia slipped off her puffy coat, and Sophia eyed the thick sweater she wore underneath. “Since when did you start getting so sensitive to the cold?”

“It’s not the cold,” Amelia replied, tugging at her sleeves. “I just want to avoid getting sick. Colds are such a—”

She stopped herself just in time. But Sophia was sharper than a bloodhound. “Hey, why’d you cut yourself off? Are you hiding something from me?”

Amelia said nothing, her head suddenly snapping to stare fixedly in one direction.

“Come on, you can’t dodge the question. Withholding secrets from your best friend is a crime, you know. Silence doesn’t get you off the hook—”

Sophia followed the direction of Amelia’s gaze—and promptly blurted out a curse. “Oh my god. Is that Miss Third Wheel over there? Who’s she having dinner with?”

Amelia looked away, her expression unreadable. “Mogan. She’s Daniel’s business associate.”

Sophia’s eyes nearly popped out of her head. “No way. Did we just stumble onto some hidden affair? Hang on, I should snap a few photos. I’ll throw them in Daniel’s face so he can see exactly what kind of woman he’s pining after.”

Amelia caught her wrist. “It’s just dinner. It doesn’t mean anything. Besides—”

She idly stirred her bowl of tom yum soup, gaze dropping. “Whatever happens between her and Daniel has nothing to do with me anymore. The divorce is happening anyway.”

She wasn’t the confrontational type. As long as Violet left her alone, she had no interest in stirring up drama. All she wanted was to get through this quietly, collect her divorce papers, and move on.

The sudden sound startled her. She sat up and answered.

On the other end, chaos—shouting, hurried footsteps, the din of a hospital.

“Are you Sophia’s emergency contact? This is County General Hospital. She drove off a bridge—she’s here in the ER. You need to get here right away!”

Amelia’s mind went completely blank. Her hands trembled on the steering wheel as she rushed to the hospital.

Just two hours ago they’d been eating dinner together. How could this have happened? What on earth had gone wrong?

She was barely holding it together.

Parking her car, she flung the door open and sprinted toward the emergency entrance, phone in hand. Almost without thinking, her fingers dialed a familiar number—Daniel’s.
