Zachary wasn’t surprised. He nodded, understanding completely.
If Daniel kept refusing to sign, then going to court for a divorce really was the better option.
“If you’re sure about filing for divorce, Ms. Turner, I’ll draw up the paperwork and submit it to the court as soon as possible.”
“Thank you, that would be great,” Amelia replied.
As she was about to leave, Zachary double-checked, “You know, with a contested divorce, you could fight for the assets. Are you sure you want to walk away with nothing?”
Amelia pushed open the glass door, her lips curling into a faint smile. “I’m sure. I don’t want anything.”
She wanted nothing at all.
It was only now that she realized she’d been heading in the wrong direction from the very beginning.
She’d assumed that someone like Daniel—a man born under a lucky star, always admired and adored—would handle divorce with swift decisiveness. After all, his wife had thrown the divorce papers in his face; wouldn’t it be beneath his pride to keep clinging to a marriage that was already over?
But reality had proven her wrong.
And when she looked back, she realized she’d been wrong about a lot of things.
For instance, she’d thought she could take the place of Daniel’s first love in his heart.
She’d thought, too, that their marriage would last, that one day they’d grow old together—holding hands on a park bench, watching the sun slip behind the trees.
All of her assumptions had been wrong. And now, as if fate demanded penance for her mistakes, here she was, forced to fight Daniel in court for a divorce.
Call it karma.

Life suddenly slowed down.
It was as if someone had pressed pause on the divorce drama; everything went quiet.
Daniel’s grandmother stopped calling to scold him every day. Grace didn’t try to reach him from random phone numbers to push him about the divorce. Life felt almost peaceful again, like it had before Violet came back from abroad—back when things between Daniel and Amelia were still good.
A few minutes later, he picked up his phone again: [Always busy. Who are you meeting tonight?]
Amelia’s reply was blunt: [None of your business.]
She didn’t deny it. Which basically meant he was right.
Did he guess correctly?
Later that afternoon, his assistant brought in some documents and reminded him about his schedule. “Mr. Campbell, you have dinner with Mr. Louis from Apex Innovations tonight.”
Daniel flipped open the file and signed his name with practiced ease. “Change the dinner to Midnight Delight Café.”
—
“You’re having your class reunion at Midnight Delight Café? Must be nice to have that kind of money.”
Sophia was a pro at gaming one-handed now, deftly maneuvering her character while chatting with Amelia. “Wait, wasn’t there some politician’s kid in your class? Is he footing the bill for everyone?”
