Finally, we circled back to the lake and shifted back to human form. 

Blake had soft blankets ready. We snuggled together on the rocks beside the water, skin still warm from running. The moon had moved to center sky, its reflection swaying gently on the lake surface. 

“How was that?” Blake asked, pulling me closer. 

“Like nothing I’ve ever felt,” I answered. “Like I finally found who I really am.” 

We sat in perfect quiet, soaking up the moment. Then I remembered something that’d been bugging me for weeks. 

“Blake,” I started, getting nervous, “I need to tell you something.” 

He immediately turned to me, eyes full of concern. “What’s wrong?” 

“I think… I think I might be pregnant.” 

Blake’s eyes went huge, then his whole face lit up like a thousand stars had exploded behind his eyes. 

“Seriously?” His voice cracked with joy. 

“I’m not totally sure yet, but there’ve been signs… like how weird food tasted at the wedding, and other body changes.” I explained, face heating up with embarrassment. 

Blake jumped up, pulled me with him, and spun me around in the moonlight. “Ava, that’s the best news ever!” 

When he set me down, tears were streaming down his face. “Our baby,” he whispered. “Our family.” 

“You’re happy?” I asked, though his reaction made it pretty obvious. 

“Happy? I’m over the moon!” He laughed. “Lucas is gonna get a little brother or sister! We’re gonna have our own kid!” 

We sat back down, Blake’s hand resting gently on my stomach even though nothing showed yet. 

“What kind of world will our baby grow up in?” I wondered out loud.
