Just as Chloe was about to refuse, Eric walked over to them.

Eric greeted lan, then nudged, “Why don’t you come too? Maybe you know the person as well, Mr. Hamilton.”
Ian glanced at Chloe and replied, “Sure.”
With the two of them already making plans, Chloe didn’t feel right saying no anymore.
The two cars headed toward Verdantville.
Over an hour later, they pulled up to a sprawling villa.
Chloe sat in the passenger seat, noticing Ian’s face tighten with every passing minute.
She hesitated for a moment, then asked, “Do you happen to know who owns this place?”
When Ian didn’t answer, Chloe opened the car door to get out. Ian unbuckled his seatbelt and reached over to grab her wrist.
Chloe glanced back, catching a flicker of hesitation in his eyes.
Before Ian could say anything, Chloe said, “Ian, you promised you wouldn’t interfere with my work.”
Ian’s eyes darkened, but he let go of her wrist.
Thomas Quinn respectfully led everyone into the living room.
An elderly man with a salt–and–pepper beard came forward, leaning on a cane.
Eric walked right up to Carrmen Rowe and greeted him warmly, then introduced Chloe and the other doctor to him.
Carrmen Rowe nodded, but when his eyes met Ian’s, a flash of hostility swept over his face.
Carrmen Rowe didn’t mince words. “The Rowes don’t welcome anyone from the Hamilton family. Thomas Quinn, see them out!”
lan, completely unfazed, took hold of Chloe’s hand and said, “If we’re not welcome here, then we’ll go.”
Chloe glanced up at Jan, seeing how grim his face had become.
It was obvious Jan wasn’t just acquainted with this family–there was serious bad blood between them.
Back in the car, when he grabbed her wrist, he was probably trying to hold her back.
Seeing things get tense, Eric quickly jumped in to make peace. “Mr. Hamilton, let’s keep things civil.”
Eric held Jan back, then went over to Carmen Rowe and whispered something to him in a low voice.

His expression flickered for a moment before Carrmen Rowe regained his calm.
Carrmen Rowe spoke, “You two can go upstairs. The one from the Hamilton family stays here.”
Chloe stood frozen, her eyes flicking between Carrmen Rowe, Eric, and Ian.

It dawned on her that Ian had figured out who she was coming to treat even before he got out of the car–and he’d kept that knowledge to himself the entire time.
Judging from how her mentor Eric handled things, he obviously knew about the history between lan and the Rowes, which was probably why he’d asked Ian along in the first place.
Turns out, she was the only one clueless about all of this.
“Be careful up there. I’ll wait for you downstairs,” Ian said.
Chloe nodded, then went upstairs with Eric and Dr. James.
As they headed up the stairs and onto the second–floor hallway, Chloe saw servants lined up every few steps and bodyguards positioned every few feet. Surveillance cameras covered every inch–there wasn’t a single spot out of sight.
The deeper Chloe walked down the hall, the stronger that inexplicable sense of oppression pressed down on her.
With all the constant watchfulness and security, this place hardly felt like a home–it was more like a prison.
Recalling Ian’s warning to be careful, Chloe could feel her anxiety creeping up.
She tugged at Eric’s sleeve and whispered, “Eric, why are there so many cameras in this house?”
Eric stopped, leaned closer, and said softly but firmly, “Chloe, just focus on treating the patient, okay? There are things here you don’t want to get involved in.”
Seeing how serious Eric looked, Chloe felt even more uneasy.
They stopped at the door to the master bedroom on the second floor.
Thomas Quinn knocked softly, and a young man stepped out.
Thomas Quinn asked quietly, “Quentin, the doctors are here. Can they go in and check on Sir Julian?”
Quentin looked to be in his early twenties, about average height, with a fair–skinned, boyish face. As he saw them, his smile was a little shy.
Quentin said, “Sir Julian’s mood is pretty stable right now. You can go in and give it a try.”
Chloe and Eric exchanged a glance, took a deep breath, and entered the room.
On the medical chart, his name was Julian Rowe, but around here, everyone called him “Sir Julian.”

Just hearing that name and title, you could tell right away–this guy was definitely someone important.
Down in the living room, Carrmen Rowe waited anxiously by the doorway, while lan sat in silence at the tea table, sipping his tea as if nothing could shake his calm.
Every so often, Carrmen Rowe darted a hostile glare at Ian–and Ian shot back with a look that held nothing but cold detachment, like the two were locked in a silent duel.
When he heard movement upstairs, Ian calmly set down his teacup and stood up.
Eric supported Chloe as they rushed down the stairs.
Behind them, Dr. James’s face was tense with fear, clearly anxious and rattled.
Ian noticed the wound on Chloe’s palm, and before anyone could say a word, he was already striding up the
stairs.
Chloe reached out and grabbed his arm, her voice urgent. “The patient is agitated right now. You can’t go up there!”
Ian locked eyes with Chloe, seeing how adamant she was. With a grunt, he turned and headed back downstairs, frustration practically oozing off him.
Ian helped Chloe over to the sofa. Dr. James knelt beside her and gave her hand a quick patch–up.
Eric turned to Carrmen Rowe, explaining, “Sir Julian is extremely unstable right now. He won’t let any strangers near him. We’ll try again in three days.”
Carrmen Rowe fixed his gaze on Ian, his eyes sharp and unwelcoming.
Carrmen Rowe added, “Only the two main doctors need to come next time. The rest of you don’t need to bother.”
Eric felt the jab in those words–clearly aimed at Ian–and cast him an uncomfortable glance, unsure what to
say.
Ian gripped Chloe’s injured hand, his expression stormy. “If you really don’t want me here, then refuse my wife’s treatment right now. Otherwise, I’m not going anywhere.”
Eric shot Chloe a look, and she hurriedly tugged lan out with her.
As soon as they got in the car, Chloe couldn’t help herself. “Ian, you said you wouldn’t get in the way of my job -so what was that just now?”
They looked at each other. Jan just smirked a bit, but didn’t say a word.
Chloe pressed him, “Be real with me. Do you have some kind of grudge against the Rowes?”
Jan looked away, saying nothing. Chloe reached out and tugged on his arm, her tone firm. I’m talking to you,
Jan.”
