She said, “I can invite Ms. Sherman into this exclusive tea house, but if Ms. Sherman wants anything to drink, she’ll have to order it herself.”
Andrea sat across from Miranda, glancing at the menu written in French. Feeling embarrassed, she lowered her head.
From the moment she arrived, Miranda had been leisurely enjoying her coffee, while Andrea was stuck with just a glass of water.
Andrea thought, ‘So that’s why this old woman didn’t bother asking what I wanted to drink. She was just waiting to watch me squirm.‘
Andrea’s face darkened, and she replied with a sharp edge in her voice. “Mrs. Hamilton, I don’t understand what you’re trying to say.”
Miranda might look all graceful and refined, but she kept finding ways to knock Andrea down a peg, always belittling her in the most subtle ways.
Andrea just couldn’t read Miranda at all, and the meaning behind her words was a complete mystery.
It was like staring at this French menu in front of her–she couldn’t make any sense of it.
This was already the second time that Miranda used tricks like this to embarrass her.
Andrea clenched her fists at her sides, her nails digging painfully into her palms.
‘Just wait,‘ Andrea seethed to herself. ‘One day, when I’m finally part of the Hamilton family, we’ll see how she likes it. She won’t be so smug then.’
Miranda didn’t even bother to hide her disdain. “My aim is to make sure my son divorces his wife. As for whether you have what it takes to be with him openly–well, that’s up to your own skills.”
Andrea let out a dry, angry laugh, her eyes full of scorn.
Bursting to her feet, she snapped, “Mrs. Hamilton, you’re the one who wanted me here, not the other way around. I never begged you for help.”
Miranda nodded, completely unfazed. “I’ve got a way to make lan and Chloe get divorced quickly. That’s me helping you. The real question is–are you willing to do it my way?”
Andrea’s gaze darted back and forth, clearly wavering.
To her, Miranda was nothing short of a sly old fox–one who’d seen it all and knew every trick in the book.
Andrea eyed her warily. “If I go along with you, what’s in it for me?”

Miranda spoke with a breezy indifference, “The old man doesn’t think much of you, and he’s not impressed by that fallen Irvine heiress either. But as soon as lan and Chloe get divorced, you’ll stop being the ‘other woman.’ That’s when your real chance arrives. If you can get my son to willingly bring you and your child into the Hamilton family, you’ll end up the biggest winner here.”
Andrea hesitated for a long moment before finally sitting back down.
‘Instead of playing games with Chloe, I’d rather just listen to this sly old woman, Andrea thought.
No matter what the Hamilton family wanted in a daughter–in–law, once Ian got divorced, she knew she’d be the one standing at their door–nobody else would even come close.
There was no way she was letting an opportunity like this slip through her fingers.
Andrea hesitated again and again, weighing her options, before she finally gave in and said, “Just tell me— what exactly do you want me to do?”
Miranda’s lips curled in contempt.
She set her spoon down slowly, looking utterly unfazed. “Chloe is now a renowned sleep disorder specialist, and you’ve been dealing with depression for over three years yourself, haven’t you?”
Miranda shot Andrea a cold glance and asked, “Wouldn’t it be easy for someone with depression to relapse and end up with serious insomnia?”
Andrea squinted at Miranda with uncertainty. “Wait, you mean you want me to pretend to be her patient and have her treat me?”
Miranda nodded. “First off, you have to quit your job and throw your whole life off balance. Let yourself fall apart–look completely worn out, so Ian will be absolutely sure your depression has come back swinging. You need to make it seem like everyone around you–friends, family, all of them–have turned their backs and abandoned you. Turn yourself into an island, cut off from everything and everyone. Make yourself so miserable that you’re even worse off than you were when you first got back here.”
Andrea’s gaze grew guarded, caution flickered in her eyes.
Miranda said, “This is a gamble with everything on the line. Win, and you’ll have your shot at being the future lady of the Hamilton family.”
She gave a brief, chilling pause before finishing, “But lose–and you’ll be left with absolutely nothing. Everything you have will be gone.”
Andrea’s breathing turned shaky as anxiety took hold. “Mrs. Hamilton, are you actually planning to use me to see if there’s still anything between lan and his wife?”
Miranda didn’t deny it, her gaze cold. “If lan is willing to leave his wife for you–just to get you treatment- then you win. If not, you lose. Go home, think it over, and give me your answer when you’re ready.”
Andrea picked up her bag, hesitating for a long moment, not moving an inch.
“That scheming bitch Chloe has cozy relationships with Miranda, Mia, and even lan’s friends,‘ Andrea thought.

:
“Even if they did get divorced, I’d be seriously stupid to make an outright enemy of her now.
Still, Miranda’s plan wasn’t out of the question, but damn, it felt like jumping off a cliff.

Andrea knew she had to think twice about this–there was no way she could give Miranda an answer right
now.
Still, Andrea knew she had to test Miranda a bit and see what she was really playing at.
With that in mind, Andrea finally spoke up. “Mrs. Hamilton, Clint is still a Hamilton, after all. My mom had a bit of a falling out with my brother and sister–in–law recently, and Clint got pretty shaken up. Could you talk to lan and ask him to spend more time with his son?”
Miranda met Andrea’s gaze, and Andrea dropped her head, looking a little uneasy.
Miranda said, “You do have a point. That kid is Ian’s own son, after all. So later, why don’t you bring Clint along? I’ll get lan to join us, and we’ll all sit down to dinner–like a real family.”
Miranda deliberately put extra weight on the words “real family.”
After Andrea left, Mia rushed over from her table, a little impatient. “Mom, what on earth were you talking to Andrea about for so long?”
Miranda picked up her coffee cup and took a slow, thoughtful sip.
Andrea might not have much skill in reading people, but her ambition was fierce–she’d never let a chance. like this pass her by.
For a woman in a desperate marriage, even the smallest glimmer of hope is something she’d latch onto and fight for.
If Chloe really wanted to get divorced, she definitely wouldn’t just waste this opportunity and agree to help Andrea out so easily.
Miranda knew exactly how her son ticked–he was stubborn to the bone, once he latched onto something, you could forget about anyone changing his mind.
If it was for Andrea, Ian would pull whatever strings necessary to make sure Chloe agreed to treat her, no matter what it took.
