Chapter 14
Frank sat across from Chloe and Jill, head bowed, silent as a statue.

Chloe’s suspicions were spot on. Before she could even explain, her parents had already decided that they’d clear out the apartment and repay lan.
If they knew Ian was forcing her hand with money… she shivered thinking of how frantic they’d get.
“Your mom’s right,” Frank glanced at the bank card in Chloe’s hand. “We’ll move out a couple days later, and the apartment goes back to
Ian.”
Chloe gripped the card, her fingers tight around the edges. She didn’t protest this time.
It was inevitable–the truth about Ian would surface eventually. Better to get it over with now.
Even if she tried hiding it, she was still an Irvine. If she was suffering, her parents would feel it.
‘Fine,‘ she thought. ‘Might as well give back what I can.”
After a beat, she looked up at Frank. “Dad, I want to keep studying medicine,” she pleaded. “Could you introduce me to Mr. Murphy?”
“Of course!” Frank replied, and Jill also nodded eagerly, fully supportive.
Once, Chloe had dreamed of being a professional violinist. That had been her world.
But at eighteen, she discovered Ian’s insomnia was severe. Quietly, she pivoted toward medicine and enrolled in medical school.
After graduation, she married Ian and gave up her career, but she never abandoned the research of sleep disorders.
Though she had cured Ian’s insomnia and held master’s degrees in psychology and medicine, she had no clinical experience.
To make a real mark, she had to start from square one.
That afternoon, Chloe went with Frank to Kingsford General Hospital and met John Murphy again.
As an international sleep disorder expert in Avalonia, John Murphy was a master in medicine, now retired and rehired at a generous salary.
Chloe had been a full–time housewife for three years, completely out of touch with practice. Therefore, she hoped to assist John and get
her career back on track.
Since John’s son had once received help from the Irvine family, he agreed without hesitation.
“Let’s start with a full checkup and a health certificate,” John told Chloe. “Come back Monday. I’ll also introduce you to a senior colleague who can help you navigate the hospital.”
Money wouldn’t come immediately. But with today’s fast–paced lifestyle, mounting stress, and rising sub–health cases–especially sleep issues–there was real opportunity waiting for Chloe.
She knew if she focused, she could achieve something meaningful. And when she was focused, there was no room for spiraling thoughts.
Chloe felt a little lightness return to her chest. After dinner with Jill and Frank, she returned to the house she shared with Ian.
She was surprised–lan was home. Sliding into her slippers, she followed him as he poured her a glass of water.
“How’s Jill feeling?” he asked,
Chloe Look the cup, but instead of drinking, she placed it on the coffee table,
Ian had always treated her parents with warmth. He kept up avances flawlessly–charming, careful, calculating
She sighed bitterly, then pulled out the bank card from her pocket.
“This card has all the money you’ve sent to my parents over the years,” she said. “They’ve spent about a hundred thousand, but the rest is still here. We think it’s better to give it back to you first.”

Ian’s lips twitched. He accepted the card with a nod.
“In a few days, my parents will move elsewhere,” Chloe added. “The downtown apartment will be returned to you.”
Ian sat on the sofa, rolling the card between his fingers. “Fine,” he replied with no pushback.
Chloe went upstairs, leaving Ian alone on the sofa.

There was a reason he didn’t turn Chloe down. Back when the Irvine family went under, he covered a fortune in debts just for them.
He was sure that even if Chloe gave back everything she own, she could never repay that kind of money in her lifetime.
He followed Chloe upstairs, who was clutching pillows and blankets as she prepared to move into the next room.
Ian frowned. He closed the bedroom door, then took the pillows and blankets from her arms.
“As long as we’re married, you’ll sleep in my bed,” he reminded her.
He wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her close. Their eyes met, then Ian softened. “Relax,” he comforted. “Don’t overthink.”
Chloe didn’t answer but sigh. Her hurt made him lean in, lowering his head to kiss her.
Chloe shoved him away immediately, anger sparking. But Ian, possessive and commanding, pinned her down, sliding a pillow under
her waist.
Just then, his phone buzzed. He withdrew the pillow, swung off the bed, and grabbed the phone.
Chloe scrambled upright. Ian’s quick motion to silence the call set her nerves on fire.
That’s from Andrea, right?” Furiously, she grabbed a pillow and threw it towards Ian.
Ian’s jaw tightened, dark eyes flicking to her.
His silence said it all. Chloe lunged for the phone, but Ian shifted, keeping it just out of reach.
The buzzing drove her over the edge. She reached for his pajama buttons. Ian pushed her back, but then Chloe’s emotions erupted.
“Why’d you stop?” she leapt at him, clawing at his shirt. “Go on! Weren’t we supposed to sleep?”
“Chloe, enough!” Ian’s voice cracked like a whip. He placed the phone on the nightstand, lifted her onto the bed, and held her arms to steady her.
