Chapter 253
“Chloe, lan called out.
Jan instantly spotted the thin scar on Chloe’s face. Without thinking, he reached out to gently brush her hair aside for a closer look.
Chloe turned her head away, dodging lan’s hand.
Jan gazed at her, lost in memory, recalling the vows he’d made to her on that island. His fingers, having just brushed her hair, curled slightly, and he quietly pulled back his hand.
Shane’s face twisted with obvious disdain the moment he saw Chloe.
He jabbed a finger at her and snapped, “It’s you again. Trouble just follows wherever you go!”
Before Chloe could say a word, lan cut in, “Dad, what are you even talking about?”
Shane shot back, “Am I wrong? If it weren’t for that woman, would Mia have gotten into a fight?”
Mia couldn’t help but speak up for Chloe. “Dad, don’t blame the wrong person. I just can’t stand Violet. I wanted to slap her!”
Shane was about to scold Mia, but Miranda Hamilton intervened and stopped him.
Seeing both his son and daughter taking Chloe’s side, Shane held back his anger and didn’t say anything
more.
Melody spoke confidently. “Uncle Henry, Vivian and I saw it all. Mitchell Garrison showed up with his guys and threatened us, but Miss Hamilton was the one who threw the first punch. The security cameras at the entrance and inside the restaurant caught everything–just check the footage if you don’t believe me.”
Vivian backed her up, sounding indignant. “Mr. Quinn, Mrs. Quinn almost got hit so hard she could’ve lost the baby. Are you seriously going to let them walk away like nothing happened?”
Their unwavering stance gave Henry a bit more backbone.
He didn’t want to offend the Hamiltons, but he wouldn’t just let things go either. Pointing at Chloe, he said, “Shane, Mrs. Hamilton, out of respect for the Hamilton family, I won’t press charges against Miss Hamilton.”
Henry paused for a moment, his gaze turning to lan. “Mr. Hamilton, my wife was attacked without cause and almost lost our child. Someone needs to be held accountable. You can take Miss Hamilton away, but as for your ex–wife, surely you won’t still-
Before Henry could finish, lan broke in sharply. “Ex–wife or not, she’s still my wife in my eyes. Anything that happens to her is my responsibility!”
Shane was still raving behind lan.
Chloe, who’d kept quiet until now, finally spoke up to lan. “Mr. Hamilton, you don’t have to bother about me.”

Chapter 253
Her tone was cold, her words putting up a wall between them.
lan stood a few steps away from Chloe.
They met each other’s gaze for a silent second before Chloe calmly looked away.
Jan forced himself to stay where he was, fighting the urge to move closer to her.
Just then, Philip strolled out of the police station, looking calm and collected.
He walked right up to Chloe, his voice gentle. “Been waiting long?”
Chloe shook her head. “Thanks for coming out so late. Sorry to drag you into this
Philip flashed Chloe a smile so warm, it felt like nothing in the world could faze him.
Vivian and Melody couldn’t hide the jealous glint in their eyes as soon as Philip showed up.
Miranda looked from Philip to lan, concern written all over her face.
Mia sounded worried. “Patrick, do you think Chloe and Philip are really a thing now?”
420
Patrick shot lan a concerned look. “Even if Chloe’s not with Philip, she’ll end up with someone else. Either way, it’s never gonna be your brother again.”
Mia was left speechless,
lan’s gaze flickered back and forth between Philip and Chloe.
He held himself back, battling the urge to rush over and drag Chloe away from Philip.
His legs felt heavy as if anchored to the ground, hands at his sides unconsciously curling into tight fists.
‘I promised Chloe I’d respect her choices and give her the freedom she wanted, he reminded himself.
He couldn’t allow himself to just go charging over, no matter how much he wanted to.
Ian was wrestling with himself, his face ashen and grim.
‘Of course she’s keeping it together, lan thought, a stab of envy tightening in his chest. She must’ve let Philip know in advance.
Philip greeted the Hamiltons warmly before walking over to Henry.
Philip said, “Mr. Quinn, I can’t say if Mrs. Quinn’s charge against Dr. Irvine for assault will actually stick. But if you back your wife up on this, I promise the Quinn family might be the first ones sitting in jail.”
Melody jabbed a finger at Philip and yelled, “Chloe is Mr. Hamilton’s ex–wife! Even the Hamiltons aren’t sticking their necks out for her, so what gives you the right to meddle?”
Vivian chimed in, “Exactly, Philip. Mrs. Quinn’s pregnant and got hurt pretty badly. Don’t go getting mixed

up in this mess. That discarded socialite isn’t worth all the fuss.”
Henry eyed Philip warily. “Mr. Foster, what’s your deal with Dr. Irvine anyway?”

Philip glanced coolly around the group, his voice steady. “Dr. Irvine has no ties left with the Hamiltons, so of course they’re not looking out for her.”
Then, his tone shifted. “But Dr. Irvine is my son’s godmother, and I’d move heaven and earth for her.”
He finished, “Whatever happens to Dr. Irvine happens to me. Anyone who makes her an enemy is my enemy too–make no mistake about it.”
Philip wasn’t exactly coy about where he stood–it was obvious, even if his words left room for interpretation.
He laid it right out there: Chloe was his kid’s godmother, and he’d go to battle for her, no matter who tried. stepping up as an enemy.
Yet with Chloe, Philip always kept it just this side of formal–close enough to show he cared, but never saying out loud what they really were to each other.
Philip turned to Chloe with a gentle glance. “I’ll be waiting for you in the car.
Chloe shook her head. It’s fine. I’ll come with you.”
Philip nodded politely to everyone, then hopped in the car with Chloe and together they drove away.
Ian’s heart twisted as he watched Chloe and Philip stride off together, not even looking back–leaving him. standing there like he didn’t exist.
Almost without thinking, lan started forward to stop Chloe, but Patrick suddenly stepped in, grabbing his arm to hold him back.
Jan turned to Patrick, their eyes meeting–his own gaze empty, as dull and gray as dead ashes.
He jerked free from Patrick’s grip, staggering toward his car on unsteady feet, like every step cost him all the strength he had left..
Behind him. Miranda’s anxious voice, Shane’s furious yelling, and Mia calling after him all blurred into distant noise–he couldn’t hear a thing, shut off from the world around him.
