That evening, lan returned to Kingsford. As soon as he stepped off the plane, Miranda and Shane whisked him straight back to the Old Hamilton Manor.
Edward gave a strict order for lan to hand his work over and head overseas for treatment, but lan shot it down without a second thought.
Ian, completely unfazed, reassured his family, “I’m fine. There’s nothing for you to worry about.”
Mia couldn’t hold back anymore. “Ian, just listen to Grandpa, okay?”
lan shot Mia a warning look. He said. “It’s just a stomach problem. It’ll take time to get better. Seriously, don’t worry about me. I know how I’m doing.” But Ian kept quiet about his angina and the fact that he barely slept
at all.
Miranda looked completely worn out. She pointed at Ian and said. “If you really can’t handle it, just let Shane take over at Hamilton Group. You need to go to the hospital and get proper treatment.
“Ian, have you ever thought about what would happen to this whole family if something happened to you? How could we possibly go on?”
Ian paused, then he said, “Mom, you really don’t need to stress over me. But if it makes you feel better, just let Mia be my watchdog.
“She can nag me to eat and take my meds on time, and drag me to the hospital for regular check–ups. How about that?”
Edward slammed his cane down on the floor, the dull thud echoing through the room. He said, “Ian, listen up. If something really does happen to you, I swear I’ll drag the whole Irvine family to hell with you.”
“Grandpa.” Mia stared at him, eyes wide with shock. “Are you losing it? What on earth has any of this got to do with the Irvine family?”
Miranda couldn’t hold it in anymore. She pointed accusingly at Edward and Shane. “Ian’s only in this situation because of you two. Even now, you refuse to face what you’ve done. Is this what you want—are you really trying to push him to the brink?”
Ian looked grim. With an icy tone, he said, word by word, ‘Grandpa, you’ll regret this.
lan felt a piercing pain twist in his chest, and without another word, he hurried toward the bathroom.
After lan left, Edward said, “If I didn’t keep the pressure on, do you really think he’d ever just do as he’s told?”
Miranda shot back, “Edward, seriously, how can you not see it? lan’s still totally hung up on Chloe.”
The air in the living room was so thick with tension, it was almost suffocating. After a few minutes, Mia was the first to sense something was wrong. “What took lan so long?”
They all exchanged glances and hurried off to the bathroom to check on lan. Shane opened the bathroom door and found Ian at the sink, washing his face.

Spotting his whole family crowded in the doorway, lan grabbed some tissues, walked out, and shut the door behind him.
Though his face was drained of all color, lan kept himself collected, insisting again that he was fine and that they shouldn’t worry about him.
After lan left, Mia still couldn’t shake off her anxiety and snuck into the bathroom to see for herself. Sure enough, she found a few bloodstained tissues tucked away at the bottom of the trash can.
Miranda was so overwhelmed with worry that she nearly fainted from crying. Shane was hit so hard by the shock, he almost lost his footing. And Edward? He said nothing. He simply turned away and returned to his room in silence.
Chloe had just reached the hospital when her phone rang. It was Eric, telling her to come by his office.
When Chloe arrived, Eric was waiting by the doorway. He shot her an apologetic look. “Edward’s inside.”
Chloe nodded and pushed open the door. Since Edward had made the effort to come to the hospital, Chloe decided she might as well meet with him.
In the reception area of the director’s office, Chloe sat down across from Edward. A table separated the two of them. Chloe kept quiet, just looking at Edward without saying anything.
Edward raised his hand, and Thomas quickly handed Chloe a document. Chloe took a look–it was a share transfer agreement.
Edward said, “This is fifteen percent of Hamilton Group’s shares, five more than I gave Mia.
“If you can get Ian to quit being stubborn and actually go to the hospital, or if you’re willing to get back with him, then all these shares are yours.”
Chloe calmly pushed the share transfer agreement back. Putting on a serious face, she said, “Time is of the essence, Edward. If that’s all, I’ll excuse myself.” With that, she stood up.
Edward spoke up, “Are you really telling me you couldn’t care less if Ian lives or dies?”
Chloe met Edward’s gaze. She said, “Tell me, Edward, other than your son and your grandson, have you ever truly cared if anyone else lived or died?”
Edward’s eyes went wide.
Chloe said, “Tan turned out this way thanks to you and Shane. You’ve trained him to be a businessman through and through, always looking out for number one, always putting profit above everything else.
“Someone as cold–blooded and self–centered as him? There’s no way he’d ever let himself end up in trouble.”
Edward’s face darkened. “All that hustling–isn’t it just for fame and money? With fifteen percent of Hamilton Group’s shares, the Irvine family could shoot straight to the top in Kingsford. Are you sure you don’t want to rethink this?”

Chloe let out a chilly laugh. “Edward, I’m definitely chasing fame and money, but there are some things I just
won’t do.”
She locked eyes with him, leaned in, and said each word with icy resolve, “As long as it’s got anything to do with the Hamilton family, I’ll steer clear, no matter what.”
