Chloe stood there in a daze, taking quite a while before she finally reacted. She said, “Mr. Logan, could you please drive me home so I can change?”
Once Chloe got home, she put on a black outfit.
Carl grabbed his jacket, ready to follow her. “Chloe, the Hamiltons lost Edward and Ian in just two days. They’re bound to be devastated. Let me come with you.”
Chloe shook her head and took the jacket from Carl’s hands, placing it back on the couch. Her face grew serious. “You don’t need to worry about me. No matter how the Hamiltons treat me, I have to go.”
Frank and Jill looked concerned, but neither of them tried to stop her. Finally, with Arthur insisting, Chloe left for Hamilton Manor with him.
It was the dead of night. The gates of Hamilton Manor were wide open as Arthur slowly pulled in. Chloe stepped out of the car, and Patrick was already waiting for her.
It had only been a day and a night since they’d last met, but Patrick looked downright drained, his face drawn with exhaustion.
Patrick said to Chloe, “The main Hamilton family members and the Weasleys are already here. Everyone else will show up tomorrow morning. Shane and Miranda aren’t doing well, and Mia’s about to fall apart. That’s why I called you.”
Chloe nodded. She kept silent, trailing after Patrick.
The early winter night was black as ink, and the gloom swallowing up Hamilton Manor felt thicker than anywhere else. The Hamilton housekeepers shuffled by, heads bowed, focused on their tasks.
When Chloe reached the entrance to the living room, she saw Mia struggling to stand, leaning on the arm of one of her most trusted staff.
Chloe stopped in front of Mia and said, “Mia, I’m really sorry.” She had forced herself to stay put, refusing to turn away or back down. But deep down, she knew this was never how she wanted things to end up.
Mia’s tears had long since dried up, leaving her eyes empty and red. The moment she saw Chloe, though, the tears returned, sliding down her face as she rasped, “Ian said it was his own choice. He never blamed you.”
Even when he was on his deathbed, lan was still sending Mia messages, telling her to take care of Miranda and Shane and keep the company running.
He told her that Chloe would always be the woman he loved and made Mia promise not to hate her. It was Jan’s dying wish, and Mia couldn’t bring herself to defy it.
Chloe lowered her gaze, nerves taut, and quietly walked past Mia. Before coming here, she’d steeled herself for whatever might unfold. Still, Chloe hadn’t expected lan to leave Mia such words before passing away.
As Chloe stepped into the living room, she found herself face to face with Shane. The once high–spirited chairman of Hamilton Group, who had always been a proud and formidable leader, was now reduced to

His back was bent, silver streaks marking his hair at the temples, making him seem like he’d aged decades in just a single night.
Shane stared at Chloe, his steps unsteady as he halted, stubbornly pushing aside the person supporting him. Right there in front of everyone, Shane pointed a trembling finger straight at Chloe, his whole body shaking.
Chloe said. “Shane, if you feel I shouldn’t be here, I can leave right now.”
Shane’s finger slowly dropped, then pointed towards the master bedroom on the first floor. His voice quivered. “You’ve had a hard time.”
Shane’s reaction really caught Chloe off guard. He’d lost both his son and his father in just two days, and he’d always held a grudge against her. Yet in all that pain, he showed her kindness instead.
Chloe walked in silence to the room, where Miranda had just woken up. The moment Miranda saw Chloe, she completely broke down, sobbing uncontrollably.
Everyone else quietly left the room, giving them some privacy.
Chloe sat by the edge of the bed, her eyes rimmed red with tears, and leaned forward to embrace Miranda. “Miranda, I’m so sorry.”
Standing at the doorway, Arthur finally let out a sigh of relief when he saw Chloe allow herself to cry at last.
Patrick asked Arthur to keep an eye on things in the room while he went see Mia. In a quiet side hall on the first floor, Patrick gave his shoulder a gentle tap, offering Mia a place to rest her head.
Mia couldn’t hold back any longer. She buried herself in Patrick’s arms and tried not to break down. “Patrick,
I’m scared.”
In just one night, Ian was gone, Edward had passed, and her parents had been hit so hard by grief it nearly broke them too. It felt like she was the only one left in the Hamilton family.
Now, everything about the Hamilton Group was dumped on Mia’s shoulders. She forced herself to stay strong, but deep down, she was scared to death about what was coming next.
Patrick pulled Mia close, soothing her. “Even if everything falls apart, I’m not going anywhere. After the funerals, I’m moving in to Hamilton Manor with you. I’ll go to work with you at Hamilton Group, and we’ll look after Shane and Miranda together.”
It was three in the morning. Patrick called Chloe out of the room. “lan and Edward are being cremated tomorrow morning. Come with me to Jan’s place. We need to pick out something for him to wear before the
cremation.”
More than an hour later, Chloe and Patrick stepped into the house she once shared with Ian. In the entryway, Chloe spotted two pairs of soft, fuzzy women’s slippers sitting side by side with Ian’s slippers on the rack.

When they reached the living room, she noticed everything was exactly the way she had left it. The used was still resting in her usual spot.
Chloe stood in the living room, lost in thought as she stared at the cake sitting unopened on the coffee table.
Patrick pointed at the cake. “Last night, I video called Ian, but he never appeared on screen. Mia and I got worried, so we left early, picked up a cake, and came to check on him. When we got here, it was already too late.”
Chloe remained rooted to the spot, her eyes fixed on the cake box. Ian was four years older than her. She was twenty–seven, and Ian was thirty–one.
At her birthday party, Chloe had said that twenty–seven would be her year to start over and live right. She never imagined Ian would die on that very day.
Chloe followed Patrick into the master bedroom. Everything looked untouched, but Chloe could immediately catch the strong metallic tang of blood lingering in the air.
She froze, and Patrick stopped at the entrance of the closet, his voice thick with grief. “This is where Ian fell- right in this closet. It happened so suddenly, and no one’s had time to clean up yet.”
