Chapter 53
As dusk settled, the city lights flickered to life, and the overpass became a sea of cars.
By the railing along the emergency lane, lan and Chloe stood face to face.
For a few seconds, they exchanged tense, silent glances.
Finally, lan shook off his shock and reached for Chloe’s wrist.
His face darkened as he stared at her. “Chloe, that’s our wedding ring.”

Chloe yanked her hand away, her eyes steely. “I wish you’d vanish from my sight forever, just like that ring
They locked eyes, and Ian stiffened, instinctively pausing in shock.
His gaze showed a mix of disbelief and panic.
He parted his lips, trying to hold back his emotions. His voice came out low and rough, the restraint obvious as he said, “Are you serious?”
Chloe kept her face blank, putting emotional distance between herself and Ian. “We’ve been friends since childhood and married for three years. I just want us to part ways peacefully. I’m not being unreasonable, and this isn’t some drama. I truly want a divorce.”
Growing up among the wealthy, Chloe had seen plenty of women tolerate their husbands keeping other women or even having children with them for the sake of their kids, the family, or just personal gain.
Miranda was one of those women. But Chloe couldn’t live like that.
Ian’s chest tightened. His voice wavered as he said, “Even if you want a divorce, you still have to come back to Tecnovia with me first.”
Chloe had never traveled alone before, not even for college. She’d always had a servant with her. This was the first time she’d gone so far on her own.
Jan couldn’t shake his worry.
Chloe fixed fan with a calm, piercing gaze, every word hitting like a punch. “lan, I see right through you. You want me back in Tecnovia, stalling this divorce, because you’re scared Edward might take it out on Andrea and Clint. Let’s not pretend you’re doing it for anyone but her. Cut the act, alright?”
Ian’s face went stiff in an instant. “Was it Mia who told you all that?”
Chloe didn’t flinch. “Ian, I did love you, but I don’t owe you a damn thing. You don’t get to use me, ever.”
Ian stepped forward, grasping Chloe’s shoulders firmly.
They stared into each other’s eyes, and Ian tried to soothe her with a gentle voice. “Don’t pay attention to whatever Mia said.”

He’d made that promise to Edward for the sake of Andrea and Clint.

It never crossed his mind to divorce Chloe anyway, so telling Edward he’d stay married just felt natural.
lan tried to change the subject, desperate to defuse Chloe’s anger.
He said, “You really came all this way just to divorce me? Did you even think about your family? Carl has been acting out lately. Frank and Jill aren’t getting any younger, and they’re dealing with health problems too. They really need you by their side.”
Chloe’s nerves snapped as soon as Ian mentioned her family. “This is all because of you.”
Ian shook his head. “Chloe, I know you ran away from home because you wanted to make me choose, either you or Andrea and Clint. You want me to send Andrea and Clint packing. But you…”
Before Ian could finish, Chloe hurled her purse aside and swung herself over the guardrail.
“Chloe!” Ian shouted, his voice cracking with panic. Watching Chloe’s resolve, Ian felt his heart almost stopped.
She gripped the railing tightly, and when Ian tried to get closer, she suddenly released one hand. “Don’t come any closer.”
Ian froze, his hands hovering awkwardly in the air, forced to stop in his tracks.
Chloe’s eyes were bloodshot as she shouted at him, “Ian, for the last time, I’m not making a scene. I’m not trying to make you choose, and I never wanted you to dump Andrea. I don’t love you anymore. I don’t want you. You make my skin crawl. Do you hear me?”
She was hysterical again. “Do you have to watch me jump off right here before you finally believe I really want this divorce? I’m not forcing you, and I’m not playing games.”
Ian’s anger spiked, but he held himself back, afraid to move any closer. “Fine. I believe you.”
Chloe sobbed, forcing Ian away. “Then leave right now. Go back, sign the divorce papers, and don’t ever interfere with my life again.”
Ian nodded, sounding resigned. “Fine, I won’t stand in your way about staying. Just don’t do anything
reckless.
Chloe exhaled slowly, feeling as if a heavy weight had finally lifted from her chest. She was relieved that lan was letting go for once.
But before she could process that relief, lan seized the moment. In a split second, he dashed forward and wrapped Chloe up in his arms, dragging her away from the railing’s edge.
At the railing, lan clung to Chloe with a desperate grip, his breath coming in harsh, erratic bursts.
Ignoring her desperate attempts to break free, he growled under his breath, “Do you have any idea how close you were to disaster? What if you’d actually fallen?”

Chloe, shaken and sobbing, struggled wildly in lan’s arms. “If I can’t get away from you, I’d rather be dead!
Ian hesitated for a brief moment and then pulled Chloe even closer into his arms.
He didn’t say anything. Instead, he closed his eyes and let the soft warmth of Chloe’s body seep into him.
For a split second, lan realized with a pang.
‘She really means it. Chloe truly wants a divorce, he thought.
lan didn’t give Chloe any room to refuse. He hauled her straight back to her apartment.
Late at night, they stood at the entrance of Chloe’s apartment complex. Her eyes were red–rimmed. Chloe stopped lan from coming any closer. “Call me when it’s time to file the divorce papers.”
Ian’s gaze was shadowed with concern as he looked at her.
He grabbed Chloe’s wrist, keeping her from leaving. “I won’t bother you for a while. Let’s both take a breather and cool down, but I’m not giving in when it comes to divorce.”
“Then we’ll take the legal route,” Chloe said coldly.
She pulled her hand out of Ian’s grasp and walked straight into the elevator without a backward glance.
If things couldn’t end peacefully, then they’d just be strangers from now on.
As the elevator doors slid shut, Ian’s hand, which had been reaching out for Chloe, slowly dropped to his side.
Mitchell, who had been waiting nearby, approached cautiously. “Mr. Hamilton, the helicopter’s ready. When are you and Mrs. Hamilton leaving?”
Ian stood quietly below Chloe’s apartment, staring at her lit window. He closed his eyes, feeling the exhaustion seep into his bones.
He’d known this day would come ever since he’d gone out of his way to welcome Andrea and Clint back in the airport.
The moment he promised Andrea he’d take care of her and Clint for life, treating Clint as his own, his marriage with Chloe had already slipped out of his control.
