Late at night, with the bathroom door left slightly ajar, shifting patches of light flickered wildly across the floor as soft, broken moans and murmurs lingered for what felt like forever.

When Chloe finally woke up again, it was already the next morning.

She moved her body with difficulty, the soreness all over reminding her of how wild Ian had been with her last night.

From the bathroom to the bedroom and back again, he was like a ravenous wolfnever satisfied, as if he wanted to tear her apart and consume her whole.

Ian emerged from the walkin closet, impeccably dressed, his face radiant with triumph after last night.

Noticing Chloe was awake, he walked over to her. His long, elegant fingers were just about to brush aside the hair scattered across her chest when his phone suddenly rang.

He sent Chloe a quick glance, then turned around to take the call.

Chloe sat up in bed, quietly staring at Ian.

He was dressed in a flawless suit, not even a hint of a wrinkle. That reserved, powerful vibe of a man used to being in controlso different from the wild, reckless beast she’d tangled with the night before. It was almost hard to believe they were even the same person.

His phone, which last night had been kept on silent and vibrate, was now boldly set to ring loud and clear- like he didn’t care who heard it.

Chloe could hear every word Ian said to Andrea, crystal clear.

Ian spoke gently to Andrea, telling her he’d gotten a model battleship for their son and would bring it by

himself later.

He also made sure to remind Andrea to look after their son and not to overwork herself.

Chloe gripped the blanket so hard her hands began to tremble.

Her face was deathly pale, lips bitten tight, and she remained completely silent.

Ian hung up the phone and turned around, spotting right away that Chloe was clearly not herself.

He came over and sat beside her on the bed, reaching for her handthen realized just how badly her arm was shaking.

Ian fixed his gaze on Chloe, his eyes unreadable and conflicted, staring for several seconds.

Ian said, Chloe, Clint is my son. That’s something no one can ever change.

Chloe looked up at him, her eyes red from crying.

She tried to move her lips, her voice strained as she said, I’m not trying to get between you two, but you really don’t have to make a show of your affection right in front of me

They stared at each other, the tension in the room almost suffocating

Ian paused briefly, then said, Andrea and I were just talking, that’s all. You don’t have to take it so personally!

He continued, I’m Clint’s dad, and Andrea and I are raising him together. We’ll be calling each other often, meeting up, having meals, and doing a lot of things together for our son. If you’re always this affected by it, how are we supposed to get along in the future?

Chloe hung her head, feeling completely trapped, with no way out.

Ian fixed his gaze on Chloe’s anguish, then leaned forward, wrapping her gently in his arms.

He softly patted her back to soothe her, saying, Just stick to what you’re supposed to do, and stop worrying about everything else. With that adorable little brain of yours, you’ll never figure it out anyway.

After lan left, Chloe curled up under the covers, trying to hide from the world.

He called Andrea right in front of her, chatting about their son like she wasn’t even there.

He even reminded Chloe he’d be with the woman he loves, raising their kid together, doing everything couples do, and taking full responsibility as a father.

Every word was like a knife to her hearthe was forcing her to lower her guard, making her swallow it, step by step, until she got used to the pain.

Chloe just stayed in bed, totally zoned out and out of it, not moving for hours until it was practically noon.

Seeing her kid brother Carl’s name flashing on her phone, Chloe finally dragged herself out of bed, forcing herself to at least act normal.

On her way to the hospital, Chloe ran into Eric Jordan.

The two of them sat together at a café near the hospital for a while, just hanging out.

Eric took one look at Chloe’s pale face and his brows knit in worry. New Year’s is almost here. I’ve moved your first day to after the holiday, so you can be with your family and take some real time off. You need it.

Eric actually cares about me. Chloe’s heart warmed at his kindness.

With her mom still in the hospital, waiting until after the New Year to start work really was a good idea.

After parting ways with Eric, Chloe headed to the hospital.

Jill and Frank were talking about leaving the hospital on the twentyeighth.

Chloe’s parents told her that her cousin had gotten outhe’d snuck over to see them last night, but was too embarrassed to show his face to her.

Ian pulled some strings and made sure a private hospital managed to match Daisy with a bone marrow donor. The surgery was set for after the New Year, and fan would take care of all the expenses himself.

When Chloe heard all this, her chest just felt heavythere was no anger, only a dull, nagging ache.

Her dad had only one brother, but her uncle had passed away from lung cancer years ago.

Her cousin’s leg was crippled, and at almost forty, Daisy was his one and only little girl.

The kid was only nine, and had ended up with leukemialife’s just too cruel sometimes.

Every time Daisy called her Auntie,Chloe just couldn’t say noher heart wouldn’t let her do it, no matter what.

If she was the parent here, she knew she could never stand aside and let the only chance to save her kid slip away, all for the sake of being fair.

By the time Chloe left the hospital, it was already evening.

She quickly looked up the number of the antique collector who had purchased her jewelry.

She wanted to buy the set back.

She called twice, but got no answer. So Chloe contacted the broker, who said he’d get back to her later.

When Chloe got home, Ian still wasn’t back.

After taking a shower and changing into her pajamas, Chloe curled up on the couch, waiting for the call.

Cora came over and said, Chloe, dinner’s ready. I’m heading back to The Old Hamilton Manor now.

Chloe got up and walked Cora to the door.

Ian didn’t like having a livein maid, so Cora would only come by to cook, and if he wasn’t around, she’d take the chance to do a bit of cleaning.

After Cora left, Chloe’s phone finally rang.
