But what mattered most to him now was hearing what she wanted.
Belle’s hands were trembling from her anxiety, but she forced them to still as she placed her palm against Rohan’s beating heart. She stood on the tips of her toes, kissed his cheek softly, and whispered into his ear, "If I come back half empty, you will always be there to fill me again. Promise me you’ll make me remember every single moment if I forget them?"
Memories make a person, and every single one, good or bad, was what made her who she was today. She wouldn’t lose any of it. Though she was nervous, if Rohan stood by her side, she would walk into this without fear.
Rohan looked into her hazel eyes, cupping her face gently in his hands until her lips pouted. He kissed her deeply and then rasped, "Don’t let her take away most of it. Remember me. Any moment you want to back out of it, just say the word and I’ll put an end to the ritual. Understand?"
She nodded, then touched her thumb to his lower lip. "I love you," she whispered, brushing her lips lightly against his.
"Always do," Rohan replied huskily, then slowly released her waist. Belle turned to their sleeping son on the couch, walked to him, leaned down, and pressed a lingering kiss on his smooth cheek.
"I won’t let her take your memory as well. I love you," she whispered into his ear and straightened up, letting her eyes linger for a moment longer on his sprawled little form, his chest rising and falling softly in his sleep.
Just as she turned to walk back to Rohan, Kuhn suddenly appeared in front of her, his eyes fixed intently on her, blocking her from Rohan and the circle the witch had made.
"What are you doing here?" Rohan asked the creature standing between them.
’You are the cause of this, Rohan. The dead coming to life and living. Don’t interfere with me,’ Kuhn said without even looking at him or explaining how he was the cause of Isabelle coming into his wife’s body.
’Are you sure you want to end this?’ Kuhn asked Belle, still ignoring Rohan, who came forward to stand behind her and scowled darkly at him for his vague words.
Belle’s brows pulled together. "End what?" she questioned, not understanding what Kuhn meant.
’End what you started from the beginning? Is it the time?’ Kuhn grumbled, making Belle even more confused.
"You know, if you’re not going to speak in a clear line or explain things, Kuhn, don’t interfere with things," Rohan warned. The creature turned glowing eyes to him, and if it had a visible face, Rohan could almost see it glaring.
If only the creature had answers, they wouldn’t be taking these steps to get rid of Isabelle’s remaining fragments from Belle, and Rohan would not try to involve Astral in anything if he could help it.
"Your Grace, we have to start before the morning is gone," came the white witch’s words as she looked up at the couple standing there, talking to an empty space in front of them. Though she couldn’t see what they were talking to, she felt a presence.
Belle looked toward the white witch and then back to where Kuhn was standing, but the creature had already moved away from her path to the circle.
