The mention of Elizabeth sent a flash of pain across Caroline’s features before she masked it. I studied her carefully, noting the subtle signs of grief beneath her composed exterior the faint shadows under her eyes, the tension in her jaw. She had lost her daughter, and that loss had driven her to this desperate act of revenge.

Ronald finally looked up from his tablet, setting it aside with deliberate slowness. He gave a small nod to the guards standing in the corners of the room, who immediately exited, closing the damaged door behind them as best they could,

I could feel Dominic’s wariness through our bond, his senses as heightened as my own.

Ronald looked directly at Dominic, his expression hardening. You owe us a child, Dominic. You killed our Elizabeth. Shouldn’t you pay with your life? His gaze shifted to me, cold and calculating. Or perhaps the life of your son would be more appropriate? A child for a child.

Whitehot rage exploded through me at the threat to Lucas. I stepped forward, my partial shift happening instinctively as my maternal instincts flared. You will NEVER touch my son!I snarled, my voice barely human. I would die before letting you near him!

Dominic’s hand found mine, his grip firm and steadying even as I felt his own fury pulsing through our bond. His eyes had darkened dangerously, the blue almost black with controlled rage.

There is no pack law or human law that supports your claim,Dominic stated, his voice deceptively calm but laced with lethal intent. Elizabeth attacked me with the intent to kill. Her death, while regrettable, was the consequence of her own actions.

Ronald’s face twisted with hatred. Laws?he spat. What are laws when my daughter lies cold in the ground? He reached into his desk drawer and withdrew a pistol, its metal gleaming with an unnatural sheen that told me it contained silver bullets. This isn’t a request, Sterling.

My pulse jumped, but years of Emily’s training had prepared me for moments like this. I scanned the room quickly, identifying potential weapons and escape routes. Left side window, your three o’clock,I communicated to Dominic through our bond. There’s an exit path.

Dominic gave no outward sign that he’d heard me, but I felt his acknowledgment through our connection.

I kept my expression neutral, deliberately relaxing my posture as if backing down. You know, Ronald,I said, my voice eerily calm,

a bond that can’t be broken.I moved slowly toward the desk, noting how Ronald’s there’s something about true parents and children attention remained fixed on Dominic, the bigger threat in his mind. Not everyone understands that connection.

My fingers brushed the edge of the desk, inches from a heavy crystal whiskey tumbler. It’s something primal, isn’t it?I continued, seeing Caroline’s eyes narrow with suspicion. The need to protect your offspring at any cost.

In one fluid motion, I grabbed the tumbler and flung its contents directly into Ronald’s eyes. The whiskey hit its mark, and he recoiled with a howl of pain, the gun wavering in his grip.

Simultaneously, Dominic launched himself at Ronald with Alpha speed, crashing into him and sending them both slamming into the bookcase. The gun clattered to the floor, sliding under a cabinet.

I pivoted toward Caroline, who had leapt to her feet, fumbling for something in her jacket. I didn’t give her the chance to retrieve whatever weapon she was reaching for. With strength born of both training and maternal fury, I tackled her, the momentum carrying us
