Note: This is a violent and gory scene. Do remember this is a dark book.
_________
Islinda could not tell which was more shocking, the fact that Madam Alice and Lillian walked into the room and caught her trying to get rid of Remy’s body or they didn’t seem to recognize Eli. He almost seemed invisible even though he was clearly in the room with them. What wretched sorcery did he use this time?
The sound of a loud cry roused Islinda to reality and she saw Madam Alice had fallen to her feet, mourning her murdered daughter. While Islinda had wrapped Remy’s body with the rug, it didn’t cover the whole of her body and her legs and face were still visible.
"What have you done?" Lillian asked, horrified and the blood drained from Islinda’s face.
While the memory Islinda had of the sisters was of the both of them always fighting, they were still blood-related and would never hate each other. Right now, she could see the pain in Lillian’s eyes over losing her sister. Her elder sister.
Islinda swallowed, she was dead meat.
"I -I...." She opened her mouth to speak, but couldn’t talk comprehensively.
Islinda wanted to explain that she didn’t mean to kill Remy. She wanted to tell them the events that led to her death. She has no choice. But was it worth it? Giving excuses would not bring her back. Not to mention, they caught her trying to hide the body. She stared into Lillian’s cold eyes and realized one thing, she was going to kill her.
"I’m sorry," Islinda said quickly and attempted to flee but Lillian had always been a smart one and must have read her body language. She caught Islinda by the hair and yanked her back into the room, pushing her to the ground.
Before Islinda had the choice to run again, she was kicked in the stomach and she let out a whimper of pain.
"You murdered her! You killed my sister!" Lillian screamed at her, continuing to kick at her and Islinda brought her knees to her chest, curling into a ball while her hands shielded her face.
To be honest, this was all Lillian’s fault. She orchestrated all of this. If she hadn’t manipulated Madam Alice into setting her up with Ryder, then Remy wouldn’t loathe her and this wouldn’t happen. However, Islinda did not point out any of her faults and bore the pains inwardly knowing Lillian was pouring out her grievances.
She just lost a sister and it was her fault. Perhaps she deserved it, Islinda thought. But the pain became too much and Islinda did not want to die. If Remy tried to kill her, Lillian would do worse.
"Please...." Islinda cried out, but it was drowned out by the sound of feet stomping on her. It hurt everywhere and she wondered if Madam Alice had joined in beating her as well.
"What did you say, big sister?"
How did he know of Valerie? Of course, he followed her. She recalled that night she had been filled with overwhelming fear on her way to the old mill, was he the one who chased her?
He must also be the one who set Valerie up to be caught by the villagers. Islinda hated Eli with every fiber of her being and if she ever survived this, she would hunt him down with everything she had.
He continued, "Don’t you want to be with him anymore? Can you imagine how he would feel when you are dead? The both of you could still be together if only you would ask for my help, Islinda," Eli tempted her with the offer.
"No..." Islinda refused but her voice wavered. She didn’t want to die. Not after everything she had gone through. She deserves a life with Valerie. She wanted a little bit of happiness.
So when she felt another jolt of pain and blood slipped down her face, Islinda made up her mind. She can’t die here.
"Help me...."
She finally made a deal with the devil.
