Matthew had barely finished dinner before Hanno insisted—more warmly than politely—that he stay the night in his house.

At first, Matthew tried to decline, but the elderly man's hospitality left him no choice.

Meanwhile, at the village entrance, Ryan and Weston sat miserably on a pair of cold stone blocks. A gust of wind swept through the air, and both men sneezed in unison.

Shivering, Weston turned to Ryan. "Sir, why hasn't he come out yet? It's getting ridiculously cold out here."

Ryan shot him a look and snapped, "If I knew that, do you think I'd still be sitting here with you?"

Just then, a burly man emerged from the village path.

"Hanno says Mr. Larden is staying the night. You two should head back."

Weston and Ryan stiffened.

They'd been sitting there since morning. All day. And now he told them Matthew was not coming out?

Ryan quickly sprang to his feet and walked up to the man with a practiced smile.

"I'm Mr. Larden's companion. Any chance I could…"

The man hesitated for a moment, clearly weighing his options.

After a brief pause, he gave a slow nod. "Fine. You can stay at my place for the night."

Then he turned to Weston, his tone turning frosty. "You, on the other hand, should head back."

Weston gave a bitter smile.

Some grudges really didn't fade easily.

"Fine. Tell Hanno I said thank you," he muttered before turning toward the harbor.

Ryan, meanwhile, followed the burly man back into the village.

The next morning, Matthew stepped outside after his morning stretches and immediately noticed someone crouching by the fence.

Surprised, he walked over to get a better look—only to find Ryan sitting on his haunches with an expression of pure misery. Dark circles under his eyes and a haunted stare completed the image.
