Julius allowed his eyelids to fall, surrendering to the soft tide of sleep that finally claimed him.

When I wake, tomorrow is bound to be another good day.

At dawn, however, he surfaced from slumber to a roar he knew all too well.

I knew that rascal would break his word! Promised me he’d stay out of your room, and the very next night he goes back on it!Everett’s voice thundered down the hallway.

Julius had listened to that bellow more times than he cared to count over the past two days; there was no mistaking it.

Quinn spoke up, calm yet unyielding. Uncle Everett, I broke the agreement. I slipped into his room in the middle of the nighthe didn’t lure me.

He tempted you, that’s what happened!Everett insisted, wagging a stern finger at Julius. This Whitethorn boy uses that handsome face to reel you in, Quinn. Choosing a man requires more than liking his looks!

I’m not blinded by his looks,Quinn said, cheeks warming, though her gaze stayed steady. We only lay side by side, holding hands. Julius suffers from chronic insomnia. He sleeps only when I’m near.

Everett snorted, skepticism etched deep. What kind of insomnia demands your constant presence? I’m not buying it.”

Juliusvoice cut in, cool and unflustered. Then tell me, Mr. Everettwhat should I have done to justifyQuinn keeping me company all night?

Everett swung toward him and found Julius sitting up, the hotel robe draped carelessly over lean shoulders like fabric on a sculptor’s stand. The loose lapels framed a hint of chest, the sight brazen in the early light.

Tousled black hair cast shadows across a face chiseled enough to seem almost unrealhigh- bridged nose, foxbright eyes still hazy with sleep. Even Everett, a man not easily impressed, had to admit the fellow looked downright otherworldly.

No wonder Quinn fell for this dangerous charmer.

If Julius ever chose to seduce in earnest, how many women could possibly resist? For now, at least, Everett took faint comfort in recognizing just how deeply the young Whitethorn seemed to love his precious niece.

Julius tightened the belt of his silk robe and swung his legs off the mattress, the morning chill sliding over bare feet. Yes. If Quinn and I hadn’t reconciled, I’d probably stay awake for the rest of my liferight up to the grave. She came last night only because she pitied the insomnia, Uncle Everett. So if you’re angry, direct every ounce of it toward me and leave Quinn out of it.

Everett snorted. Of course, I blame you!His eyes rolled skyward, as though the ceiling itself might share his exasperation.

There was no universe in which he would fault his treasured niece.

Even at breakfast, Everett wore the pinched look of a man whose prized orchid had just been stomped by pigs.

While sipping the last of his coffee, Everett cleared his throat. Finish tidying up and keep me company at the lake. We’re going fishing.

Uncle Everett, not today,Quinn interjected before Julius could answer. Julius and I have errands in town. Give us until tomorrow, and we’ll both join you by the water.”

At the promise that his niece would tag along, Everett’s scowl dissolved into a grin as warm as

sunrise.

Leaving the Fane manor behind, Quinn slid behind the wheel while Julius rode shotgun, the sleek sedan humming toward the detention center where Joaquin awaited.

At the entrance, a duty officer informed them, Mr. Joaquin Whitethorn will meet only with Mr. Julius Whitethorn. No one else.

Julius looked to Quinn, uncertainty flickering behind his eyes. Quinn said, I’ll wait in the café across the street.

She pointed to a small coffee shop under a striped awning opposite the busy road.

I’ll be out soon,Julius assured her, then followed the officer down a sterile corridor.

The visiting room was a cube of concrete and glass, silent except for the buzz of fluorescent lights. Joaquín sat waiting, hands clasped, his normally brooding face lifting into a thin smile when Julius walked in.

You finally made it. I was beginning to think you’d stay away.”
