“Do you think I’d push you away because of that?” She cut him off, eyes bright and unflinching. “My grandmother lost her grasp on reality after my mother disappeared–should I fear you’ll despise me for that, too?”
“Never. I have never cared about that,” Julius said, earnest and quick.
“Then what reason would I have to care?” She smiled. “We’ll have a perfectly healthy baby.”
Quinn pulled her phone from the nightstand, the glow spilling between them. “By the way, once we’re home, I have to attend an old comrade’s baby shower. I’ve been picking out gifts- help me decide on colors.”
Julius watched as she opened the shopping app, scrolling through the cart and presenting each tiny item for his approval.
“These little outfits are adorable,” she said. “Do you think pink or pale yellow is prettier? Hmm -mint green is lovely, too. Maybe I should just order all three.”
“You really like children?” he murmured.
“Of course. Do I look like someone who wouldn’t?” she teased, one eyebrow arched.
“I just…” His complexion paled further. He was worried that he wouldn’t be able to fulfill her expectations.
“Don’t look so frightened. I’m not mad.” She laughed, locking eyes with him. “I’ve often thought how wonderful it would be to have a child who takes after you.”
“Even if the child is as obsessive as I am–maybe even a madman–would that still be all right?” he whispered.
“Stop talking about yourself that way,” Quinn said firmly. “You’re intense, yes, but you’re not insane. A child who resembles you would be perfect. I’m genuinely excited.”
The word “excited” brushed against something raw inside him, and his gaze flickered with a mingling of awe and fear.
While his thoughts drifted, Quinn’s lips grazed the curve of his car. The phone slipped from her fingers and landed softly on the nightstand.
“Julius, will you grant my wish?” she breathed, her whisper warm against his skin.

“What?” Julius gasped, just before she pushed him gently backward onto the mattress.
“Help me make a child who looks just like you,” she said, laughter sparkling in her voice.
On any day before this one, Julius would have seized the invitation with boyish delight. Tonight, though, the same words hovered in the air like an unopened letter. Doubt pressed on his chest, so heavy he could not decide whether to say yes or simply keep breathing.
Only hours earlier, his father had spoken of a grim rumor surrounding his mother’s aunt- some whispered family affliction that might yet be written in Julius’s own blood. He did not know if it was true; he only knew he had to find out.
Until every secret was dragged into daylight, he dared risk nothing–not his future, not Quinn’s laughter, and certainly not the life they might create together.
“Quinn, wait-” Julius gasped, the plea breaking unevenly across his lips.
Her mouth grazed the delicate shell of his ear, then trailed down the hard line of his jaw to the warm, vulnerable hollow of his throat. When her lips settled against his Adam’s apple, heat stormed through him. Every muscle tightened, every breath dragged ragged from his lungs.
It was the deepest temptation he had ever known.
The instant she began to suck gently at the pulse beneath his skin, his entire body shuddered. Some urgent response kindled from bone to fingertip, and a chorus of cells demanded he surrender.
Her hand slipped lower, skimming the ridges of his abdomen. With a surge of desperate self- control, he caught her wrist and held it still, his heartbeat hammering against her palm.
“Don’t–please. I promised your Uncle Everett I wouldn’t… not inside the Fane Manor,” he managed, each word wrenched from a throat thick with craving. The excuse was flimsy, but it hid the terror that truly chased him.
Until the truth was known, he could not claim her. If she did conceive–and if the shadowed history his father hinted at proved real–he might one day become the villain in her eyes.
“All right,” Quinn sighed, her disappointment soft but genuine. She glanced at the flush across his cheeks. “Then what are you going to do about… that?”
