Stepping into the Information Security Department, she found Jacqueline already inside, barking orders and jabbing the air as though the staff were unruly cadets.

“You’re actually listening to an outsider? If something goes wrong, do you think she—some stranger–can shoulder the blame?”

The staff explained, “But Ms. Bridger’s fix is the fastest and most effective method–we reviewed it thoroughly.”

Jacqueline scoffed. “Oh, please. How much has she paid you to carry her on your shoulders? I designed this security framework with my own hands. I won’t let her tinker with my work.”

Quinn moved through the doorway, her tone calm but cutting. “So those bugs are your handiwork. Do you realize the risk you’ve left simmering inside the system?”

Upon seeing Quinn, Jacqueline’s mind flashed back to the night hackers breached the network, the night she lost face in front of everyone.

Her face darkened. “I’ll repair those bugs myself. I don’t need you meddling.”

Quinn folded her arms. “Will you? This system was put online two years ago, and those bugs have been here ever since. Some were even logged by your own team, yet you ignored them.”

Color rushed to Jacqueline’s cheeks. “I was planning a superior upgrade for the entire system.”

“In two years, you upgraded nothing. Hackers nearly cracked the core last week. Do you grasp what that could have cost the corporation?”

“Enough, Quinn. You barely beat those hackers by luck. I am a recognized prodigy. It’s obvious I outclass you in this field.”

Quinn sneered. “A prodigy who couldn’t lift a finger that night? If that is genius, the word has become very cheap.”
