Quinn clamped a hand over her mouth, skirt swishing as she spun and sprinted toward the restroom at the far end of the corridor.
Jacqueline remained behind, mid–apology, her smile freezing to an awkward grimace as the watching staff exchanged uneasy glances.
That witch is doing this on purpose. I already apologized, yet she acts like my very presence makes her sick. She’s humiliating me!
In the tiled cubicle, she bent over the bowl, retching until the sour burn receded and nothing but watery saliva dripped into the porcelain. By the time she stepped out, her stomach felt hollow, scraped clean.
Did I eat something bad?
She lifted her head toward the mirror. The woman staring back was bloodless, eyes damp. Quinn prided herself on robust health; nausea almost never visited her.

Moments ago, she’d been perfectly fine–until Jacqueline’s cocktail of sweat and cheap perfume drifted over, flipping her stomach like a switch.
She had never been that sensitive to smells before. A troubling possibility flickered.
Her

drifted to her still–flat abdomen.
Notebook math told her her period was already a good month overdue.
She had chalked it up to stress, the way turmoil can bully a body into misfiring, but what if that excuse no longer held?
What if… I’m pregnant?
She rested a cautious palm against the cotton of her blouse, as if touch could divine answers.
It was possible. Those heady evenings with Julius had often forgotten barriers; still, she hadn’t expected results to be this immediate.
A vision shimmered: a child as charming and beautiful as Julius, arms outstretched, calling her Mommy. The thought softened her features.
Early pregnancy wouldn’t derail anything. They were headed for vows anyway.

“Ms. Bridger, are you all right? Mr. Fane and Mr. Whitethorn are worried. You’ve been gone a while, and they asked me to check on you,” a young female staffer blurted as she hurried into
the restroom.
“I’m fine,” Quinn said after rinsing her mouth, dabbing her lips with a tissue. “Thank you. You can go.”
The restroom door swung open, and both Everett and Julius strode toward her, worry across their faces.

“You look terribly pale,” Everett muttered, lowering his voice. “If you can’t forgive Jacqueline, so be it. The family spoiled that girl too long, let her ego grow unchecked.”
His chest tightened at the memory: Jacqueline dismissing Quinn, his long–lost niece, as if she were nobody. The insult still burned.
That was why he hadn’t lifted a finger when Julius reacted with force moments ago. A public lesson, necessary and swift, reminding every relative and employee who truly held his favor- and whose side he would choose.
“Uncle Everett, I’m hardly bothered,” Quinn said, tone measured. “Jacqueline has talent in coding, but her temperament makes her unsuited to oversee the corporation’s cybersecurity. Perhaps you should recruit more seasoned professionals.”
Everett nodded; the thought had been circling his own mind.
The recent hacking incident had opened his eyes. For all Jacqueline’s trophies and the prodigy label, she had frozen the moment a real crisis struck. The company couldn’t afford that vulnerability again.
Julius stepped closer, voice gentle yet firm. “How do you feel? Let me take you to a hospital.”
