The meal ended, and Quinn once more felt the relentless grip of morning sickness. Not much of what she had eaten remained; the restroom stall bore silent witness to her battle.

The moment she stepped out, Julius moved toward her, worry etched into every line of his face. “Is it very bad?”

“I’m fine. It’s not that bad,” she replied.

Inwardly, she compared the queasiness to the grueling drills of the Falcon Special Forces. Next to those, this is child’s play.

Seeing the worry in his eyes, she added, “I’m serious. Back in intensive flight training, I threw up until my legs felt like air. Compared with that, this little nausea is nothing.”

“Was it very hard back then?” he asked.

“There’s no easy way to be a soldier,” Quinn said with a soft laugh. “But hardship pursued for a dream is its own kind of happiness.”

As she spoke, Julius could almost see a halo of light surrounding her, a brilliance born of conviction.

She lifted a hand to her still–flat stomach, voice turning tender. “For this child, even these bouts of nausea feel precious.”

That evening, back at the sprawling stone halls of Fane Manor, Quinn finally broke the news of her pregnancy to Everett.

Everett almost passed out. “Pregnant?”

“Yes. Eight weeks along already.”

“Was it this punk who did this to you?” Everett barked, shooting a glare at Julius beside her. “How can a grown man be so irresponsible, letting his girlfriend get pregnant before a wedding? Thinking only of himself… Have you considered what Quinn has to face?”
