Chapter 504 We Face It Together
“I… I’ve been looking into my mother’s side of the family. It may not be only her who is sick. Her aunt shows the same shadows, which means the darkness could already be inside me… and it might even affect our child.”
As he spoke, the arms locked around her waist shook so hard the tremor rattled his shoulders and broke in his voice. It felt as though he had torn away the last curtain hiding the bleakest corner of his soul and forced himself to let her see. When the words ran out, he fell silent, a man awaiting sentence, frozen against her warmth.
The room collapsed into a terrible hush, thick enough to smother sound. Head bowed and lashes lowered, Julius felt his heart tighten again and again; she could never guess how brutally the fear gripped him.
He had planned to keep the secret buried until the investigation returned undeniable answers.
Yet her sudden pregnancy, their decision to push the license forward, and–most of all–the way she asked him to trust her love changed everything.
Because of that, he wanted, desperately, to believe.
He wanted to believe that whatever storm rose, she would never let go of his hand.
“So you think your mother’s illness is probably genetic?” Quinn’s voice rang out.
“Yes. And if that frightens you, you can still decide not to marry me. The baby is small; a medical procedure now would spare your body as much pain as possible.”
Yet a quieter voice inside him whispered the question no one else could answer: What would become of him? What was he supposed to do if she walked away?
Contradictory thoughts jammed together until they felt like splinters under his skin. He knew he could not live without her, and the knowledge only sharpened the terror of losing her.
“You said maybe, which means you don’t actually know, right?” she asked.
“I’ve already sent people to investigate. It will take time,” he replied.
“Did that come from your father? The day you visited him in the holding cell?”
“Yes,” he answered in a low voice.
“Why didn’t you tell me that day?”

“I… I had no idea how to begin. I feared my father was right, feared the sickness would mark me and our child, feared you would find me disgusting.”
“Then why say it now, especially right before we register? If you truly feared I’d abandon you, waiting until after the paperwork was signed would have given you every advantage, wouldn’t
it?”
Julius smiled bitterly. “If someone truly wants to leave, a piece of paper can’t hold them. I refuse to start our marriage with your regret.”
Quinn lowered her gaze and covered his shaking hands where they rested at her waist. “Then let me tell you now. I will not regret marrying you.”
“Have you really thought it through? If my mother’s side truly carries the illness-”
“Even if that’s true, I won’t regret it. I want to be with you.”
He froze, the world narrowing to the steady light in her eyes.
She tugged gently at his hands. “All right, can I look at your face now? I want to see you.”
He did not struggle this time. Quinn guided his arms apart, turned within the circle of his embrace, and lifted her face until they stood heart to heart, breath to breath.
“Julius, I love you more than you think. More than your fears will ever let you imagine.” Quinn lifted her gaze, the quiet light in her eyes turning steadfast, almost luminous against the dim
