Emily Blair closed her eyes, exhaustion in her voice. “Mom, my friend’s not feeling well. I brought him to the hospital to get checked out. I’ll head home later, so don’t worry. I was busy and didn’t see your call.”
Hearing this, Emma George breathed a sigh of relief. “Is it serious? Do you need me to come by tomorrow to help?”
Emily shook her head, though her mom couldn’t see it. “No, Mom, it’s nothing major. He’ll probably be discharged tomorrow.”
“All right, just come home as soon as you can.”
“Yeah, you should get some rest too.”
Emily hung up and massaged the back of her neck, rolling her head to work out the stiffness.
As she turned absentmindedly, she suddenly found herself staring into a pair of furious eyes.
Her heart skipped a beat. Instinctively, she blurted, “When did you wake up?”
Tristan Davis glared at her, his otherwise handsome features twisted in a scowl. His lips were pressed tight—he looked so angry, he was almost trembling. The flush in his pale face made him look oddly vulnerable, like a wronged, upstanding young man who’d been bullied.
Emily sighed. “Seriously? I brought you all the way to the hospital and you’re still not satisfied?”
Tristan’s glare didn’t waver. If anything, the blush on his cheeks deepened.
Emily studied him, noticing the redness creeping up to his ears. She frowned. “Don’t tell me the medication’s wearing off already. Are you feeling okay? Want me to call the doctor?”
He still didn’t answer, just kept staring at her like she’d committed some grave offense.
Emily shook her head, stood up, and muttered, “Great, he’s totally out of it. Is this medicine really that strong?”
She reached for the nurse call button.
Suddenly, Tristan grabbed her wrist.
“Hey, what—”
But the moment his hand touched hers, he recoiled as if he’d touched something filthy, letting go so abruptly her arm dropped to her side.
Stunned, Emily looked into his furious eyes.
She pulled her hand back and stood facing him, brows knitted. “What is wrong with you? Seriously, what’s your problem now?”
He’d already tossed her hand aside once in the alley, and now he was at it again?
