Chapter 11
Matthew stood in front of the floor–to–ceiling windows of his office, a cigarette burned to the filter
between his fingers.
Seven days. Evelyn had completely vanished. No calls, no texts, and every message he sent went
unanswered.
He finally caved and asked his assistant to look into her whereabouts, but there was still no news. That awful feeling, the one that told him Evelyn truly meant to leave him, was slowly devouring
him.
Crash!
He hurled the ashtray off the desk, but it didn’t help ease the frustration boiling in his chest.
Just then, the door opened.
Lila walked in, holding a lunchbox. When she saw the mess on the floor, she hesitated at the
threshold.
“I brought you lunch… Matthew, what happened in here?”
He rubbed his temples and spoke flatly. “Just leave it there.”
Lila set the box down and slowly approached him. “You’re upset because Evelyn still hasn’t shown
up, aren’t you?”
When he didn’t respond, she sighed and gently placed her hand on his arm.
“Don’t worry too much. She probably just needed space. You’ve always treated her so well. She
couldn’t possibly bring herself to leave you for real.”
Matthew pulled his arm away and turned back to his computer screen, clearly uninterested in the
conversation.
A shadow of frustration flashed in Lila’s eyes. She reached into her bag and took out a document, her voice trembling slightly.
“By the way, I had Kent fully checked out after his last fever.”
She handed him the report. “The doctor said his body’s very weak, poor nutrition, low immunity… It’s all my fault. I shouldn’t have let Evelyn take care of him.”
Matthew frowned and flipped through the pages. Lila’s voice dropped to a whisper.
“Maybe Evelyn resented the baby. After all, once he was born, you weren’t hers alone anymore.

Some women are like that. They unconsciously see the child as competition. I just never thought she’d come to hate him so much…”
As she droned on, Matthew skimmed the report, his eyes suddenly freezing on one line.
Blood type: AB
He looked up sharply, his mind reeling.
He was type O. Lila was type A.
There was no way they could have a child with AB blood.
That infertility report Evelyn left behind resurfaced in his memory like a slap to the face.
“Matthew?” Lila’s voice wavered under his stare. She forced a smile. “What’s wrong?”
Matthew didn’t answer. He snapped the report shut and forced down the shock surging inside him.
“You should head home. I’ve got work to do.”
Lila opened her mouth to protest, but one look at his cold expression silenced her. She left, sulking.
As soon as the door shut, his assistant rushed in.
“Mr. Roscente! We found her! Mrs. Roscente boarded a flight to Switzerland a week ago. Her immigration paperwork went through. Here’s the surveillance footage…”
Matthew snatched the tablet from his hands.
On the screen, Evelyn walked calmly through the airport, sunglasses on, her thin figure firm and unyielding. She never looked back once.
His hands trembled, a jumble of relief and panic surging through him.
She was gone. But they had finally found her.
She had filed for immigration. That thought hit him like a ton of bricks.
