Chapter 19
After that night, Evelyn grew increasingly exasperated of Matthew’s presence and began avoiding him altogether.
She stayed in the office every day, rarely stepping out. Often, she worked late into the night, not leaving until the entire building was empty.
One evening was no different. She sat hunched over her desk, fingers tapping out the final details of a design proposal. Her eyelids grew heavier and heavier until she finally gave in to exhaustion and fell asleep, resting her head on her arm.
Soft footsteps echoed through the hallway.
When Matthew pushed the door open, this was the scene he saw.
Evelyn’s face was turned slightly to the side, her long hair spilling over the desk. Her breathing was calm and light, and the soft glow from the computer screen cast a warm light across her delicate features.
He stood in place, not even daring to breathe too loudly, afraid he might wake her.
After a long while, he finally stepped closer and gently draped his suit jacket over her shoulders. His fingertips brushed her hair, and he froze, as if touching something fragile, then quickly withdrew
his hand.
He gazed at her sleeping face, his Adam’s apple bobbing slightly. He wanted to reach out and tuck
her hair behind her ear, but forced himself not to.
“Evelyn…” he whispered.
But in the end, he did nothing more. He simply closed the laptop gently and turned to leave.
By the time Evelyn woke up, the sky had begun to brighten.
She blinked against the sting in her eyes and tried to stretch out her sore shoulders–only to realize there was a jacket draped over her.
It was deep gray, made of fine fabric, and the cuff was embroidered with the subtle “Roscente” insignia.
She froze, then, without a hint of emotion, pulled it off and tossed it into the trash bin.
“Matthew, you really don’t know when to give up,” she murmured under her breath, her tone
ice–cold.
Later, when she walked past his office on the way to make coffee, she saw the door slightly ajar and

the room empty. Only the overflowing ashtray confirmed that he had stayed there all night.
She turned away, not looking back.
At the same time, a gossip post was going viral on a social media platform back in China.
[Exposing the shady rise of so–called ‘genius designer‘ Ms. Winston! Homewrecker, gold digger, and now cozying up to Swiss nobility…]
The post included a few blurry photos–some of her with Matthew from the past, others showing her talking with Simon in a café.
The captions twisted the narrative, implying she relied on men for career advancement and had ruined Matthew and Lila’s relationship.
The comments section exploded. Clueless netizens hurled abuse. Some even dug up Evelyn’s contact information and sent her vile messages.
Just as Evelyn returned from the pantry, a colleague rushed in and knocked on her office door.
“Evelyn, you need to see this–someone’s trying to ruin your reputation!”
She clicked the link, skimmed the content, and replied calmly,
“Let them say what they want. Lies can’t pass for truth.”
She didn’t care. But someone else did.
Three hours later, the post vanished completely. The account that posted it was permanently
suspended.
Lila’s own account was flooded with legal cease–and–desist orders.
Every defamatory statement involving Evelyn was forcefully removed, and even her profile was
blocked from public view.
Swiss media released an official statement:
[The Carter Group legal team has filed charges against the defamer and will fully protect Ms. Evelyn Winston’s reputation.]
At the bottom of the statement was the bold red seal of the Carter family’s legal firm–intimidating
and undeniable.
Matthew was in a project meeting when the news reached him.
His assistant whispered the update in his ear. Matthew’s eyes darkened as he immediately pulled
