Chapter 2
By the time Evelyn had taken care of everything, the sky had already darkened.
She stood at the nursery door, listening to the baby’s cries coming from inside, while Matthew and
Lila’s earlier conversation still echoed faintly in her ears.
Her footsteps faltered, and she froze. Her hand on the doorframe slowly tightened.
In the past, she would have rushed in without hesitation to soothe the crying baby. But now, she
couldn’t bring herself to step inside.
That wasn’t her child.
That baby belonged to Lila and Matthew.
“Madam, thank goodness you’re back!” the nanny stepped out with the wailing infant in her arms, clearly frustrated. “Kent’s been crying for ages and nothing I did worked. Why didn’t you answer your phone?”
Evelyn didn’t respond. She simply stared at the baby’s face in silence.
The child’s features resembled Matthew so closely, but the dimple at the corner of his lips–it was
identical to Lila’s.
And all this time, she had never noticed.
“I hired you to take care of the baby, not to question Evelyn’s whereabouts.”
Matthew’s voice rang out behind her.
“Give him to me.”
The nanny fell silent at once and handed the baby over. Matthew took him effortlessly, patting his back in a practiced motion. The crying quickly subsided.
He glanced up at Evelyn, his eyes filled with confusion. “Why did you go out all of a sudden?”
Suppressing the storm brewing inside her, Evelyn kept her expression calm. “Just went out to pick up a few things,” she said flatly.
Matthew walked over and gently touched her cheek. “You don’t look well. Are you feeling sick? Did you not take care of yourself while I was away?”
His fingers were warm. Once, that touch had brought her comfort. Now, it only made her feel sick.
“I’m fine. Just tired,” she said softly, turning her head to avoid his hand.

His eyes darkened for a moment, but he quickly masked it with a tender smile. “Are you mad at me? I know I’ve been traveling a lot lately and haven’t had time for you. How about this? I won’t go to the office tomorrow. Let’s take Kent to the pool together, alright?”
Evelyn forced a small smile but said nothing.
Matthew reached out and ruffled her hair gently, then headed to the kitchen. He returned with a
glass of warm milk. “Here, drink this and get some rest.”
Evelyn stared at the milk, a sudden memory flashing in her mind.
Ever since he mentioned trying for a baby, the nightly glass of milk had tasted slightly different.
At the time, he had told her, “It’s a new dairy supplement specially developed by the company for
you.”
She took the glass, pretending to take a sip. Then, when he wasn’t looking, she poured the milk into
a vase nearby.
“I’m a little sleepy. I’ll go lie down,” she murmured, setting the glass aside and walking to the
bedroom.
Matthew watched her retreating figure, his gaze unreadable.
That night, Evelyn lay on the bed with her eyes closed, listening to the steady rhythm of Matthew’s breathing beside her.
Suddenly, she felt the mattress shift slightly. He had gotten up.
Her breathing remained even as she listened to the sound of him tiptoeing out of the room.
Seconds later, her eyes snapped open, and she slipped out to follow him quietly.
Matthew didn’t go to the study. He didn’t check on the baby either.
He walked straight out of the villa.
Evelyn’s heart pounded in her chest. Barefoot and silent, she trailed behind him.
The night air was cool. She watched as he crossed the garden and walked directly to the neighboring
villa.
The door opened.
Lila, dressed in a silk nightgown, threw herself into his arms.
“Matthew, you must be exhausted,” she said softly, gazing up at him with concern. “You have to

drug her every night and still come here to be with me…”
Matthew wrapped his arms around her and pressed a kiss to her forehead. “You deserve it.”
“But I’m still scared,” Lila whispered, her voice trembling. “What if she finds out?”
