There was a brief silence on the other end of the line. But for Charles Foster, those few seconds felt longer

than a lifetime.

“I’ve been trying to track down Mrs. Bennett,” Mr. Chambers finally said, hesitation threading his voice. “But there hasn’t been a single trace, sir.”

“Every tracks of her have been wiped clean. And frankly, sir, I don’t believe she could’ve done this alone… Someone must be helping her. Or… she’s truly given up on you and disappeared far beyond my reach.”

He paused.

“Sir, do you still want me to keep looking? Mrs. Bennett disappeared so thoroughly–it’s clear she doesn’t want to be found. Even if you did find her… chances are, she wouldn’t come back.”

“She will.”

Charles cut in coldly, his tone resolute and unshakable.

“Vivian loves me too much to really leave. If I just apologize properly, coax her a little, she’ll come back to

me.”

Just the thought of Vivian coming back made his chest tighten with longing.

In his mind, he could already see her blushing, curling into his arms like she used to, pouting and

murmuring, “Do you know how long I’ve been waiting for you?”

A faint smile tugged at the corner of his lips. His tone relaxed noticeably.

“All right, Mr. Chambers. Spare me the nonsense. Just find her. Whatever it takes.”

Mr. Chambers swallowed whatever else he was going to say.

“Yes, sir,”

After that, aside from visiting Evan at the hospital every day, Charles buried himself in work.

Diana Schuyler had called and texted more than once, telling him to come home.

Annoyed, he blocked her.

His plan was simple: find Vivian, move out, and leave that madwoman behind for good.

After a stretch of silence from Diana, Charles assumed she had finally let it go.
