“Depth of feeling grows only through time together,” Soren answered, tone now almost patient. “At present, we are strangers beneath polished masks. To speak of love is frankly

Fiona did not believe years could alter hearts. He is laughing at my naivety again. She swallowed the argument and let silence fall.

Outside, he guided her to the waiting carriage. When she offered no farewell, he finally spoke. “Set our matter aside until you return from your grandma. Send word when you depart.”

Fiona did not glance back. The curtain dropped; the wheels rattled away, carrying her into the violet dusk.

Behind Soren, a languid male voice broke the hush. “So, you left me cooling my heels just to whisper sweet nothings. Whose radiant lady was that? She could turn a battlefield into a ballroom.”

Soren did not spare him so much as a sidelong look. “That Dreamveil Serena Prescott flaunts -did it come from Morgan?”

They had reached this very topic moments before Fiona arrived, and the unfinished question now resurfaced between them.

The man straightened, gravity replacing teasing. “Exactly. Cornelius acquired it from Morgan. That suggests the Thankerton family may pivot toward siding with Cornelius. Privately, however, Morgan and Zephyr share no evident ties.”

“Which does not mean,” Soren said evenly, “that Morgan favors Cornelius.”

“Then what game is he playing?” The man’s brow knitted. “Anything else is acceptable, but heaven help us if he proves an agent of foreign powers.”

“Opportunity will reveal motive soon enough,” Soren replied, unhurried. “Have Luna keep

watch.”

The man gave a low whistle. “Luna is the most stunning woman I’ve ever seen. Even that young lady just now falls short. Had you not known Luna’s skills, you would have claimed her years ago, yes?”

Soren’s reply was soft and lethal. “If you so much as think of Luna that way, start digging your

After a pause, he tried a safer subject. “Xavier Luthor is in Junbert lately, keeping close company with Zachary Niven. Should we worry? To outsiders, it appears he’s working eagerly for his future father–in–law.”

With anyone else, that zeal would look ordinary.

Yet when that same silence–or its faintest ghost of a smile–met Xavier, a man who bowed to no one and never spared a breath on flattery, the atmosphere turned suddenly, intriguingly charged.

Soren halted mid–step, the candlelight catching the tension that tightened his jaw. “Keep an eye on him.”

Having delivered the order, he pivoted on his heel and slipped back down the corridor, his cloak swirling behind him like a shuttered flame.

It was the determined stride of a man in no mood for pleasantries.

The remaining gentleman tapped a knuckle against his chin, lost in a thicket of private calculations.

Before her journey to Yondale, Fiona accompanied her mother, Meryl, through the lacquered doors of Scarlet Boutique.

Meryl meant to select two impeccable ensembles for Helen, determined that every stitch honor the Princess Royal’s exacting taste.

“Your grandmother is far more critical than I am, yet if the gift comes from you, she will dote on it regardless. I am thrilled you will stay at the Princess Royal’s residence, but a part of me already misses the sound of your footsteps at home.”

“If you have chosen it, Mother, then Granny will love it just the same.”

“I only pray her health is holding steady. Even years ago, she shivered at the slightest chill.”

Fiona’s answering smile was bright as dawn. “I will take good care of Granny, I promise.”

No sooner had the promise left her lips than she saw Soren descend the staircase, Luna gliding a respectful step behind. Long after the young lord vanished around the balustrade, Luna lingered where he had stood, fingers curled over her skirts as though reluctant to let the

moment end.

Meryl was surprised. “I never imagined Luna’s savior was Lord Soren himself!”

Fiona remained silent, letting the comment drift away like smoke.

“No wonder she refuses every suitor,” Meryl murmured, voice soft with sudden understanding. A common match would give her nothing. As a concubine in the Zonfrillo Estate, she might at least gain a measure of standing–especially if she bore a talented child. The advantages would eclipse those of many noble–born heirs.

Luna soon spotted Meryl and exchanged a brief, decorous greeting before returning to her duties.

Fiona, demure as ever, remained at her mother’s side, her silence polished to a quiet shine.

She had yet to tell Soren the day she would depart for Helen’s place.

My comings and goings are mine alone; I owe him no explanations.
