His motives are far from pure,Princess Helen said without concern. But I’m no fool. I’m prepared. If you dislike the sight of him, stay in the suburbs. He disdains you? Then spare him the courtesy of your regard.”

Why did you have Pierre Lawson killed, Granny?Fiona looked down, voice soft yet

unwavering. Henry had told her only days ago that Pierre was dead; she had assumed it would come later.

How many officials walk this earth with clean hands?Helen snorted. The man should have known his place. Pierre dared question your uncle’s military record and threatened an inquiry. That, to me, was an insult to the dead.

Perhaps Helen bore her own sins, yet her eldest son had shed blood for Duflana. She would not allow anyone to tarnish him. She had only meant to scare Pierre into silence, never imagining the man would end up dead.

Fiona forced a wry smile. They all say Granny destroyed evidence of looting Yondale, pinning every charge on our house.

In the life she remembered before this one, that rumor had been the first domino, toppling the Princess Royal’s household into ruin.

She refused to believe that no unseen hand guided the pieces. Yondale’s bureaucracy was crowded; someone had to have dragged her family forward as a shield when Pierre’s Indictment Scroll vanished.

Somewhere, the scroll that listed every official crime in Yondale still lay hidden. If that parchment were foundand burnednothing would remain but Helen’s supposed guilt, tidy and complete.

As Fiona wrestled with the thought, a servant bent double in the doorway. Princess Royal, Lord Soren requests an audience, the man announced.

Helen tapped her ivory fan against the arm of her chair, a faint smile playing at the corner of her lips. How curious that Soren would seek an audience on his own initiative. She already had a fair idea what the young lord hoped to gain.

Even so, she remained cautious. Soren carried not only his personal ambition but the entire weight of the Zonfrillo Estate, and protocol left her no choice but to grant him entry.

You may leave, she told Fiona, patting the girl’s slender back. She had no intention of letting her granddaughter cross paths with Soren just yet.

I’d rather stay with you. Granny.Fiona clasped Helen’s hand, her dark lashes lifting in a silent plea. She was eager to pry into whatever game Soren was about to play.

Helen’s heart melted at once. The child feared Soren might slight her, and that protective spark softened every edge of the Princess’s composure. Very well, she murmured. Stay. Your company pleases me.

The doors opened with a muted groan, and Soren strode beneath the lantern light. The first figure to meet his gaze was Fiona, seated primly at her grandmother’s side. She threw him a fleeting glance, quick as a bird’s flutter, then bent her head to knead Helen’s shoulders, the picture of obedient distance.

What brings you to me, Lord Soren? If our hospitality has fallen short, speak freely. Make yourself at home,” Helen said. She reclined on the couch as if carved from marble, refusing even the slightest courtesy of standing.

Fiona’s fingers paused. The Zonfrillo and Princess Royal households were sworn rivals; only her grandmother could utter such congenial words with a straight face, and even that boldness made Fiona’s pulse skip.

Merely a matter that requires the Princess Royal’s counsel,Soren replied, withdrawing his

gaze.

Then speak plainly.

I hear Mr. Lawson keeps a concubine who still resides in Yondale. I should like an introduction,Soren’s voice was light, almost casual.

Helen’s smile thinned. Rebecca is indeed in Yondale. When would you care to meet her?

Tonight.

Fiona felt her grandmother straighten, tension pulling her shoulders taut. Still, Helen merely smiled and said, “See that Rebecca is brought here at once.”

Soren did not linger. At the threshold, he cast one lingering look over his shoulder, letting his eyes rest on Fiona for a heartbeat longer than courtesy allowed, then vanished into the night-

scented corridor.

What was that look? Fiona wondered. A schemer like Soren must know he won’t find out anything from Rebecca. Why the urgency for this latenight meeting?

Once Soren was gone, Helen’s thoughts were elsewhere. She waved Fiona away with gentle words. Within half a day, a procession of discreet visitors drifted into the estate. The main doors closed behind them and never reopened, sealing whatever negotiations brewed inside.
