Chapter 124 Moonlit Confession

She had never been worshipped by a kiss before. In her previous life with Soren, desire had been crude, a clash of bodies that stirred the flesh yet left the spirit cold.
This tenderness, so new, felt foreign, and the strangeness lit her shyness like tinder. Not only my face. Surely every inch of me is blushing.
When she pushed again, Xavier’s strength collapsed. He swayed, loosened his hold, and sagged against her shoulder, utterly defeated by wine.
Fiona was plotting how to slip away for help when she caught sight of Soren. He stood beneath the lantern glow, expressionless to the point of chill.
The moment their eyes met, her stomach dropped. She froze, Xavier’s weight still on her arm, locked in a silent standoff with the man she knew would hate this tableau.
She understood that Soren’s interest in her, whatever its origin, would never allow him to enjoy the sight of another man so close. His earlier frost toward Henry had proven as much.
“Mr. Xavier had far too much wine tonight–none of this was intentional,” Fiona blurted, choosing to defend him first. Someone without patronage, he depended on the Zonfrillo Estate to climb. Angering Soren would shatter that fragile path.
Soren’s features grew even colder, ice crystallizing where expression should be. Fiona realized too late that her defense of Xavier sounded suspiciously like protectiveness.
She braced for his cutting remark, but it never came. He pivoted, cloak whispering against the stone, and walked away without a single word.
Fiona hesitated, then summoned two guards in hushed tones. They guided the unsteady Xavier off to rest while she returned to Princess Helen’s side, determined not to wander again.
By then, the banquet was dissolving. Laughter thinned, chairs scraped back, and the soft clatter of farewells rippled through the garden.
“Looks like Mr. Xavier’s drinking game isn’t as impressive as I thought,” Princess Helen teased, recalling how he had downed every toast without flinching earlier.
“Tonight is Your Highness’s birthday banquet; Mr. Xavier simply didn’t wish to dampen the Princess Royal’s joy,” Samuel said, piling praise upon her with practiced ease.
Fiona glanced toward Rebecca—the very guest she had invited under Soren’s name. With Soren gone, Rebecca stood stiff and uncertain, unable to decide whether to stay or flee.

“Rebecca, are you eager to head home?” Fiona asked with a dazzling smile, turning the awkwardness into kindness.

Rebecca dropped to her knees, voice trembling with apology. “Princess Royal, I never meant to intrude. 1-”
Princess Helen cast Rebecca a glance as cool and thin as winter ice. “Since you are already here, stop that sniveling. Anyone watching might assume I had been the one bullying you.”
Rebecca dropped to her knees and touched her forehead to the polished floor. Terror sealed her lips; not another sound escaped her.
Fiona stepped forward, voice gentle yet clear. “Granny, the country roads are lonely after dark. Please send a few guards to see her safely home.”
Princess Helen’s brows lifted, suspicion sliding into her tone. “Rebecca stays at the Lawson Estate inside the city. Why presume she lodges in the countryside?”
Feigning surprise, Fiona answered, “While I was at the hillside manor a few nights ago, I noticed lamplight in Pierre’s country house. I assumed someone lived there.”
Princess Helen folded her hands. “That cottage has been empty since Pierre left for Danwick. You must have been mistaken, Fiona.” Behind the measured words, a seed of doubt rooted itself in her mind.
Fiona glanced toward Samuel, catching the flicker of guilt in his eyes, yet she pretended not to see it. “Granny, I’m not the only one. Pearl noticed the same light.”
Princess Helen let out a short, icy laugh. “So someone still cannot forget Pierre, it seems.”
With that single remark, she said nothing further, the scene settling into a strained silence.
Fiona knew Princess Helen well. The moment Helen sensed deceit, she would investigate every track. Once those men who left the city were traced, the truth would surface.
Her aim was twofold. First, it was to warn Princess Helen to watch the people at her side. Secondly, to force her to tighten control over Pierre’s two residences so schemers could no longer slip in and out.
As for the Indictment Scroll, Fiona dared not mention it yet. If Princess Helen discovered undeniable evidence of her own crime, even persuasion might not stop her from burning it.
Back in the west court, Fiona tossed in bed, sleep refusing to come. Princess Helen had killed Pierre just when he departed for Danwick to send a secret letter to the Zonfrillo Estate–a timing too perfect to ignore.
