Though his tone stayed faint, anyone listening closely could hear the spark of interest beneath. “She began plotting her marriage rather early,” Soren noted.
He was not a man who scattered judgments, so Roxanne held fast to her conclusion–the fortune he sought must have been for Fiona.
Yet watching Fiona’s calm eyes now, Roxanne could not be certain.
“But a husband who cannot even sway the pillow talk will make wretched company,” Roxanne said with a wry smile, meaning to console Fiona yet also to soothe herself.
“Roxanne, you are far too exceptional to fret over marriage. Any man who wins you will count it as his greatest luck.”
Roxanne answered with a gentle curve of her lips, the gesture small but sincere.
A short distance away, Naomi watched, ready to greet Fiona, when Mindy’s disgruntled voice cut through the garden hush. “She might sparkle on the outside, yet her morals are rotten. Who knows what sort of clandestine liaisons she carried on in distant Yondale?”
“Mindy, mind your tongue. Fiona is nothing like the woman you describe,” Naomi said, brow furrowing. Still, why does my brother linger so often in her thoughts?
Mindy caught the stiff set of Naomi’s shoulders and felt a stab of unease, yet jealousy still won out. “She was off a moment ago, whispering heaven–knows–what with Mr. Xavier. Tell me, what true lady would ever act so forward?”
Naomi’s answer came quick and steady, like an arrow finding its mark. “We were in open view. What scandal could there be? I often trade words with Alastair of the Thankerton family. By your measure, does that make me improper, too?”
Mindy paled at the misstep and seized Naomi’s sleeve. “Naomi, I wasn’t speaking of you. I’m babbling. Forget I said a thing.”
Naomi’s mind, however, had already drifted elsewhere. What exactly has Soren done to Fiona?
Mindy leaned closer, voice dropping to a fretful whisper. “Naomi, do you think Mr. Xavier… likes her? I caught him looking her way more than once today.”
Only then did Naomi truly notice Xavier. The young man sat among his peers, outwardly calm, almost bored–except his gaze never strayed from Fiona. Every tilt of her head, every smile, he stored away like precious coin.

Of course, Xavier was hardly the only one drawn to Fiona’s glow; half the hall seemed magnetized toward her.
Among them stood Laurence Yeats, son of the famed General Yeats.

Fiona was beautiful on an ordinary day; tonight, she appeared otherworldly, and Laurence felt ripples spread across his heart, gentle yet unstoppable.
He tried for another glimpse, but Xavier shifted in his seat, blocking the view as neatly as a closing door.
Laurence’s eyes slid to Xavier. The other man met the look, offered a polite, distant nod, then returned to watching Fiona.
The gesture was courteous, yet something about it unsettled Laurence. He swore Xavier had just measured him, the way a strategist sized the battlefield.
“Last year, when Fiona had fallen into the river, Mr. Luthor had been the one to haul her out,” Vincent said. He remained grateful for that rescue; yet with tension running high between the two households, a formal thank–you seemed unwise.
Instead, Vincent resolved that if Xavier ever faced trouble unconnected to the Niven family, he would repay the debt then and there.
It was a trifle, Xavier answered softly. “There’s no need to thank me, Vincent.”
Vincent’s admiration only deepened. “You’ve only just returned to Jexburgh and are already posted to distant Junbert. If the capital confounds you, come to me. My door stands open.”
Xavier accepted the offer with an easy smile, as though the friendship were already forged.
Vincent studied him. A favorite of Emperor Aldric should not need to court favors–yet Xavier was doing exactly that. The realization lit a quiet spark of curiosity.
Then a second thought dawned, and Vincent’s lips curved in knowing amusement. If Xavier became my brother–in–law, the match would be more than respectable.
Across the room, Laurence read that smile and felt an uneasy twist. And where does that leave
me?
Not far away, Fiona stood with Meryl, Hannah, and Joanna, the three matrons forming a gentle circle while she answered each with bright, attentive grace.
When the coming–of–age ceremony ended, Fiona personally escorted Victoria to the carriage. Xavier shadowed them, listening as the two women chatted with lively warmth, adding not a
